Latest Beagle, cutting backwards
Mid afternoon yesterday we got hit with the latest variation of Beagle. We update our virus definitions daily but this one spread so quickly that we didn’t have a pattern file that identified it. We had 2 users here that opened it and infected their computers. Luckily the damage was isolated and minimal but it pointed out how short of blocking our users from receiving any attachments at all in email, it is next to impossible to protect against the reckless end user. The email they received said it was from another employee but the message body simply said “price” and nothing else. This should be a red flag as it makes no sense but when I asked one of the people that opened it why she did it, she said it was because it was from one of the employees here. Of course I have addressed multiple times how email addresses can not be trusted but evidently the user forgot. It spun into a somewhat nasty exchange but hopefully the lasting result is people in here think twice before just opening anything in email.
The internet is such a tool. I was able to find out info regarding the Cub Cadet reverse cutoff switch in a matter of seconds. I went home last night and pulled a single wire and I was able to mow in reverse. Most times I take for granted how much information is available to me. For whatever reason I really appreciated the convenience last night.
