Iphone 1 week report

I’ve had my Iphone for about a week and I basically love it.  The interface is so easy and intuitive it makes using the device a joy.  I love all of the applications available for it and I love how easy it is to install them over the air via the app store. The screen looks fantastic and the picture quality of the built in camera is many notches above what my Treo 650 has. The speed of the 3G network, when I can connect to it is impressive as well. Web surfing on the Iphone is SO much better than the Treo.

There are only a few negatives that I can come up with.  Of course first is battery life, a widely known problem with the Iphone, especially the 3G units.  Having a phone with all of these goodies like 3G, Bluetooth, Wireless, Exchange Active sync support and more sucks a lot of power.  You have to charge the phone every day at a minimum.  If you were a heavy phone user you would have to charge it during the day.  You can turn certain things off to reduce the power drain but it still is a power hungry little beast.  The fact that it does not have a user serviceable battery that you can simply swap out makes it’s higher power usage more of a glaring issue.

Like I mentioned the camera on the unit is very nice.  However I don’t understand why Apple didn’t include the capability to also shoot video with the unit??  WTF?  All smart phones today have that ability, even my 5 year old Treo 650 can do it.  Currently the only way to shoot live video with your Iphone is to use a third party application that can only be installed on a “jailbroken” unit, booooo.

The interface to email pictures that you take sort of sucks.  It only allows you to email one picture per email instead of allowing you to attach multiple pictures to one email.  Again, something my treo 650 can do easily. Finally, the virtual typing interface can be a challenge.  The lack of any tactile response really takes some getting used to.  Granted, the auto-correction feature does a decent job of fixing up your mistakes but still, trying to type much beyond a short email gets more than a little frustrating. I definitely prefer the little chiclet keys on the Treo.

Today is a WOOT OFF, just in case you didn’t know.
