Happy Friday

It’s Friday yay.

My weekend plans are mild. I plan on getting the hardware to mount shelves on the far concrete wall in the garage.  I’d like to make some progress on the dining room table full of pictures, art and knick knacks.  Maybe I’ll work on the Moto Guzzi some more.

I’m sitting in my office with all of the overhead lights out.  The only illumination is the answering machine circuit board lamp my uncle made, the light from my dual monitors and the light that spills in from the small windows along the hallway. I just feel like sitting in the dark today and it saves energy to boot.

My former high school classmate and current Facebook buddy posted that he swears he saw a ghost the other night while taking a leak at a bar.  He said that as he was at a urinal a stall door opened and a white form/figure came out.  The only problem is this guy rarely posts anything that is on the level so my assumption was he is bullshitting.

It would be kind of a cool thing if I saw a ghost.  When I was younger I had some weird experiences.  I never SAW anything but I certainly freaked myself out enough.

Our basement in the hundred year old farm house was particularly scary.  It smelled of must.  The switch at the top of the steps only lit the steps.  To light up the rest of the basement you had to pull strings on a handful of light sockets around the area.  I can’t tell you how many times I would reach for a string and feel like when the bulb came on I would be faced with some sort of grotesque creature.

Behind the furnace was the scariest place of all.  I assumed that was where something would hide.  I would rarely even look in the direction of the furnace if I was in the basement out of fear.  I remember during a few brave moments I would pull one of the lights on the furnace side of the basement and walk defiantly into the area, trying to flush out whatever was there.  I never saw a thing, never heard a thing but it sure scared the shit out of me.

I’ve also described in the past my feelings about the piece of art that my uncle made.  My mom had it on top of a shelf that was at the bottom of the steps to the attic (our bedroom).  It had a face in it that was pointed to the side.  For years I imagined that this thing was looking at me.  As I would go down the steps I would hardly ever look at the thing for fear it would be blinking back at me.  Of course the few times I would sneak a glance it wasn’t staring at me.

I had similar feelings in the barn, another dark and scary place.  Everytime I went to grab my bike out of there there was a bit of fear involved.

I have always more or less disregarded those experiences since I was a child.  A child has a very active imagination that can manifest itself into actually believing there are “monsters in the closet”.  However if I saw a ghost as an old, mostly logical adult that would change the game for me.  As a person that basically believes that when you die you are worm meat and little else, seeing a ghost while not under the influence of some substance would throw a wrench into my belief system.  If ghosts exist then who knows what really happens when you check out?

BOO!

Redirecting the heat, Woot

At the gym they had the live health care debate on so I hopped on a cardio machine close enough that I could read the closed captioning.  I watched the debate go on, alternating between both Republican and Democratic participants.  Both sides made some good points and Obama seemed to be genuinely interested in taking in all opinions.

Then it was John McCain’s time to speak.  McCain was not interested in talking so much about the health care issue itself.  He was more interested in grilling Obama about the lack of transparency, secret backroom deals and obvious lobbyism that created the 2,400 page piece of legislation.  Obama refused to discuss the process and instead stressed that their time today was meant to be used to talk about the issues that are preventing an agreement being reached.  I actually was on both sides of the fence on this.

Yes Obama is right, the summit isn’t about mudslinging, it isn’t about rehashing what was obviously a f’d up process that was utilized to give birth to this bastardized health care proposal. Yet, I yearned for him to directly address McCain’s questions.

Why was the health care bill process such a mess?  Why were the promises of open, televised debate on the issue not kept?  Why is it ok to fill the bill with kickbacks to various legislators special interests to ensure their support? Why would certain states make out better than others? All of this shit really pissed me off.

Now I already know some of the answers to those questions.  Obama lacked the power to do it, plain and simple.  Now whether he knew all along he was promising something he knew he couldn’t deliver (transparency) or he actually thought he had the momentum to do it is up for debate.  He simply can not declare that Congress televises all aspects of their proceedings.  He can ask nicely but there is no law saying they have to abide by any of it.  Congress, both Republicans and Democrats do NOT want the general public to see just how disgustingly dirty the legislative process is.  They would never agree to full transparency.

Perhaps I would have felt better about it if Obama would have just fessed up and said something like ” John, I did make the promise that the health care reform process would be more transparent.  I agree with you it has not followed the course I would have liked it to and I regret some of the compromises that were allowed to find their way into this bill. I want to fix it.  I am hoping that today is the start of true transparency”

Despite what some blog readers may assume, I do not have political blinders on by any means.

Today is a WOOT OFF by the way.  Nothing like blowing a few bucks on geeky junk to make you feel better.

Lucky 7, 2 x 3

I’ve been running Windows 7 Ultimate at home for several months and have been very pleased with it so far.  I have been anxious to run it at work.  My new Windows 7 workstation arrived this week.  I wasted no time getting to work.

I have had 3 or 4 new workstations over the last few years.  Each time I got new hardware I elected to simply back up the old workstation and restore the OS intact onto the new hardware.  Using this method made the migration quick, but it also lent itself to making my pc into a huge cluster f of software.  You can see what my desktop looked like.  When I opened all of the programs on the start menu it literally almost filled up the entire screen.  Anyone that works in IT knows a PC benefits greatly from starting over from scratch once in awhile.  I just had SO much stuff on my pc I dreaded doing it.

Well going to Windows 7 was enough motivation for me to finally bite the bullet and start from scratch.  For the past two days I have been going through the arduous process of sorting through my stuff and determining what I really need, reinstalling apps and moving data.  I now am using the Windows 7 box as my main computer.  I still have my old pc up and running so I can easily access anything I may have forgotten.

So far Windows 7 has been as great at work as it is at home.  There have been a few challenges.  I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.  There are a number of apps we use at work that won’t run in a 64 bit OS.  A few years ago you would have been SOL in this situation.  Well Windows 7 handles this in a very slick way utilizing Microsoft Virtual PC.

Basically you download and install Virtual PC and a Windows XP disk image (both free).  After that is up and running you install your problem application into the XP virtual PC.  After installation you need to make sure the application shows up in the All Users program group.  Being in that group ensures the application will be available in XP application mode.

What is XP application mode you ask?  Basically what happens is any app in that group will show up on your Windows 7 box as a sub menu under Windows Virtual PC / Windows XP mode Applications.  When you click on the program it automatically launches a virtual XP session and then launches that app.  It’s VERY slick and makes Windows 7 able to literally run almost ANYTHING that ran on Windows XP.

Just like my home system, my work pc is ultra fast and responsive even now that I have the majority of my apps reloaded.  Of course I am also benefiting from the upgraded hardware, a Core 2 quad processor with 8 gig of ram.  I am a BIG Win 7 fan.

Yesterday at the gym I followed up on my 3 mile run with Ali on Monday by doing another 3 miles on the treadmill.  I can’t tell you the last time I ran two three mile sessions in a three day period.  My knees have been doing quite well lately.  The only side effect I have is a sore lower back this morning.  It doesn’t feel too severe though.

Today is the big televised health care summit.  Do you expect anything to come from it?  Nope, me either.

How would you like to get chewed on by a killer whale?  Wow imagine being in that crowd during the show and seeing that all go down?  Traumatic.

I also would hate to be that speed skating coach that told his skater, who was on his way to locking up the gold medal, to change lanes incorrectly, resulting in the skaters disqualification.  Imagine being directly responsible for costing a kid 4 years of training to achieve the ultimate, a gold medal.  Wow, I cannot imagine the guilt.  Sure it was just a mistake but it’s a mistake a coach at that level should just not ever make.  I hope they have him under suicide watch.

So long Brian

So the Eagles officially released Brian Westbrook yesterday.  I don’t think it came as much of a surprise to anyone.  Westbrook was good for a long time but he ALWAYS has had injury issues.  It seemed every week he would sit out practice and just play in the games.  Over the past two years it got worse culminating in last season where his contributions were very small after he missed more than half the year with various problems.

It’s a weird thing how quickly the page can turn for an NFL player, especially a running back.  In 2007 Westbrook gained over 2000 total yards, two years later he is looking for work.  The same situation played out the day before when the Chargers cut LT.  It’s all about dollars in the end.

It will be interesting to see if Westbrook winds up hooking up with another team and even more interesting if he manages to regain a semblance of his former greatness.  Regardless, I’m fine with the move.  I think McCoy can pick up the slack and it’s not like the Eagles run the ball all that much anyway. Thanks for 8 years BW.

Running, when in doubt draw

After work I met up with Ali to run at Sugden Park.  When we started running years ago Sugden was a favorite spot to do so.  It’s typically nearly empty and has a running/biking/walking trail that circles a pretty large lake.  The track also is quite different depending on the direction you run.  If you run in a counter clockwise direction you wind up running on a gradual incline for over half of the course.  If you run the other direction you are running downhill, obviously much easier.

We decided to go the harder direction.  One lap around the course is right around 1.5 miles.  We did two laps at a sub 10 clip, a good pace for Ali.  I told her we could go as long or as short as she wanted.  Even though Ali is a legitimate half marathoner at this point and I have never run more than 6 miles, I would never be the one to pull the cord on a run.  I’d keep going until parts of my knees were dropping off behind me.

Jeremy loves to challenge me at various contests of strength, agility and mental acuity.  He typically loses most of these contests but it doesn’t stop him for coming back for more.  I admire his competitive spirit if nothing else.

Yesterday he threw out a chess challenge.  He was quite confident he could best me in the game.  We hopped onto Yahoo Games and got into a match.  Jeremy went first and I instantly recognized that he must have thought I was a schlub.  He was actually trying to put me in a 4 move checkmate.

Of course I instantly blocked the attempt and a few moves later I had him in a situation where he was going to lose a high piece without any retribution.  Desperate to save face, Jeremy resorted to using his queen to ping pong my king back and forth a few times so the game would be called a draw, knowing he was going to lose otherwise.

Of course I was happy to rub it in Jeremy’s face.  He knew he was toast and instead of losing the piece and perhaps regrouping he raised the white flag.  We have a laundry list of other competitions that he wants to challenge me to including vertical jump, field goal kicking, one on one basketball and a grappling match.  I encourage him to think twice about continuing down what has to be a frustrating path of futility.  Yet, he persists.

Aspen, $20 soft pretzel, boom, robot

We finally had a weekend with what used to be typical Florida winter weather with mild temps in the mid 70’s.  On Saturday while Ali was out on a run with her girlfriends I worked around the house.  I did some more Camaro prep work in the garage.

In order to house two vehicles in the garage I am going need to utilize space very efficiently.  One thing needed to help clear the far wall was relocating the garage fridge to the near wall. The only problem was I had a wire shelf on that wall which was too low to allow the fridge to fit underneath.  So I remounted the shelf about 6 inches higher to address the problem. After doing so I rolled the fridge over, it slid under the higher shelf quite nicely. I still have one large rolling wire shelf unit on that far wall which is going to have to find a new home.  After that I plan to install some permanent high shelves on the concrete wall so I still have some degree of storage in the garage.

Ali had a ballet performance Saturday afternoon.  I didn’t attend it since we agreed I would go see it on Sunday instead.  By the time Ali got home it was time to head right back out to the Pet Lover’s Ball, the high brow fund raiser put on by the Humane Society.

Last year was the first year I went to the event.  They made a few changes to the event this year, some good, some not so good. Last year everybody had an assigned seat at a table.  This year there were two classes of ball attendees, the upper class table dwellers and the lower class people (us) that had no assigned seating and instead just milled around.

The tables were corded off to create a clear visible barrier between the VIP’s and not so VIP’s.  The food stations were scattered around the area.  As a non-VIP you grabbed your plate and then had to circle to find a place to eat it.  They had precious few high top tables sprinkled around for the low life’s to eat at but none were available.  Ali and I wound up eating out on the pool deck.

The food itself was very good and very plentiful just like last year.  There was a big change this year which was a huge positive, it was an OPEN bar!  Last year they gave you two drink tickets, meaning you could get two drinks on the house, after that you were dipping into your pocket.  I think the positive of the open bar outweighed the negative of the segregated eating arrangements.  I had a mix of alcohol that included a cosmopolitan, Beck’s beer and saki.

The saki was particularly interesting.  I never had it before, it’s served warm and in tiny little cups.  The taste was unlike anything I tasted before, it had a very organic feel to it.  Someone warned me that if I never had saki before I should not over indulge so I kept it to one cup.  The combination of alcohol definitely helped lighten my mood which admittedly was not great on the way to the event.

Just like last year, the ball was filled with women primped to the max.  The botox was fresh, the cleavage was spilling out everywhere and there were more cougars than in a zoo.  It was entertaining just to scan the room.

This event is a fund raiser more than anything.  Ali and I perused the various silent auction items.  Last year we threw a bid on something just for shits and giggles, of course it was outbid.  This year we saw another package that intrigued us, a two night stay in Aspen, a little hard shell carry on piece of luggage and dog watching from some high end dog sitting service.  Ali asked if she should bid on it.  I said sure, knowing we would never win with a $300 bid.

Well as the evening went on I kept drinking and Ali kept updating our bid.  By the end of the auction our bid had nearly doubled up to $570 and we were now the winners.  My feeling were mixed about the win. I’ve never been to Aspen and on the way to the ball one of the things we discussed was how we are very restricted on where we travel because we are both very hesitant to leave the dogs, especially Nicki. Sadie would be fine being kenneled, she loves everyone. I wasn’t thrilled spending the money of course and the last thing we need is another bag.  We have bags barfing out of our closet already.

Ali was excited to win and excited to travel.  We will probably wind up going during non-snow season since neither of us are skiers.

On Saturday one of my projects was fixing our under the sink RO system.  It stopped producing water.  After doing some investigation I assumed the main RO cartridge needed to be replaced.  There are three cartridges in the RO system, a pre-filter, a post-filter and the RO cartridge.  I had just replaced the pre and post filter a few months back but the main RO cartridge had not been replaced yet.  So it was a logical conclusion that it was now time.

These cartridges are very expensive, the RO cartridge alone was over $70.  I had Ali grab one on her way home from running Saturday.  I installed the cartridge, waited a few hours and then was frustrated to see I still did not have water.

On Sunday I did some more investigation, leaving the new RO cartridge in place but replacing the other two with the blank canisters that are used for cleaning the unit.  The water flowed freely.  Son of a bitch, the other filters are bad.  So off to Home Depot I went to get the other two cartridges which cost another $45.  So after $100 + of new cartridges the RO system is flowing once again.

Like I said, I agreed to go to Ali’s ballet performance on Sunday.  It was being held outside in Cambier Park in conjunction with some big art festival.  Ali wanted to leave early so we had time to walk around and look at art.  Before we left we got into a bit of an argument about it.

Ali said that maybe we could find some nice art to hang on our mostly barren walls.  Our walls have been mostly barren since they were repainted.  I told Ali that our spare room has a TON of stuff piled in it that was on the walls, maybe we could first get what we want out of that pile back up first before we go and buy some overpriced piece of art?  That stuff had been sitting in the spare room for months, untouched. Well Ali didn’t appreciate me complaining about it and carried the chip on her shoulder for awhile.

As we got into downtown Naples it became obvious that the art festival was a big event.  We drove the entire height of the parking garage without finding an open space.  My refusal to be a parking space monger cost us a couple spots but I refused to sit there with my turn signal on for 5 minutes while an old geezer finally backs out of a spot.  We eventually lucked into finding a spot that was only a block from the festival.

The street was lined with exhibitors on either side of the street, the walkway was jammed with people, mostly old ones.  Ali and I were in the vast minority of people under 65 years old from the looks of it.  Some of the art we saw was nice although most of what I liked were simply blown up pictures.  Of course there were no deals to be had anywhere.  If you go to a Naples Art Festival to buy art you probably can afford to wipe your ass with $20 bills.

Speaking of $20, that is exactly how much we spent on food.  $20 bought us two soft pretzels and two 10-12 ounce cups of lemonade.  No that isn’t a misprint.  I think I was too much in shock to react appropriately when the vendor asked for payment.  The appropriate response would have been “$20????  Are you f’ing crazy? No thanks” followed by us walking away in a huff.  Instead I numbly handed over the Andrew Jackson even as I registered the transaction as the most ridiculously overpriced food purchase of my entire life.

I noticed that this food stand and all of the other food stands had no posted prices.  Perhaps this was to be more inline with the high brow atmosphere of an art festival.  You know, if you have to ask what it costs, you can’t afford it.  To have that apply to carnival junk food is a bit over the top for me.  I’m still angry with myself for actually paying that much for food.

So after walking around eating the world’s most expensive soft pretzel and seeing nothing that seemed worth the money to me, we headed to the stage where Ali would perform.  Her routine was the same one they learned last year so it was easy for Ali to pick it up again.  They actually did two sets so I saw the performance twice. Ali did a good job in her role.

After getting home I fired up the new grill for the first time and made some burgers on it for me and the dogs.  It seemed to do a nice job and actually burned much hotter than the old one.  Sunday night around 10:15 I was startled by a huge noise that rattled the entire house.  It only took a few moments for me to realize it was the sonic boom from the space shuttle.  I don’t ever recall the noise being quite that big or the impact on the house being that severe.

I saw Tiger’s press conference on Friday.  Well I listened to the entire thing on the radio and then saw video clips later.  After hearing his robotic, rehearsed speech I am 100% sure that he is well on his way to no longer desiring to have sex with the scores of hot women that land on his doorstep, not.  It’s all about damage control and little else in my opinion.  Sure I’m sure he is sorry he got caught. Don’t get me wrong, I am far from the moral police.  If Tiger wants to bang a different woman every night that’s fine with me. Just don’t try to bamboozle the public about who you really are.

Forgot

I forgot to mention that I finished Deception Point Wednesday night.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book.  Among Dan Brown books that I have read I would probably follow the general consensus where Angels & Demons and DaVinci Code sit at the top with Digital Fortress and Deception Point sitting slightly lower on the pedestal.

I finally got to watch one of my favorite Winter Olympic sports yesterday, curling.  I just find the sport fascinating because it’s so bizarre.  These grown men playing big boy shuffleboard on ice makes me laugh out loud.  The best part is when the commands are yelled down to the sweepers which are typically “HARD!” “WOAH, WOAH!” or “NO!”  Hard means they should sweep like mad to smooth the ice in front of the stone to alter it’s path. WOAH and NO means no sweeping, the stone should be ok as is.

I was watching the USA/Denmark match.  It was a nail biter which was blown by the US when they misfired on what should have been an easy clear on their last attempt.  The errant stone was pushed by the chubby leader of the US team.  As soon as he let it go he knew he f’d up.  You could tell since he immediately started yelling  HARD, HARD!  Oh well, it’s still fun to watch.

This weekend I will be watching a short ballet performance Ali is in, attending the Pet Lover’s Ball and futzing around the house.

Mired in meeting, f’ing phone, Duluth

Last night I sat in for Ali at the running club board meeting.  Two hours later I wished I hadn’t volunteered.  These board meetings have a bad habit of running very long, last nights clicked in at right around the two hour mark.  It seems that a lot of the same discussions go down meeting after meeting and these discussions carry on for long periods of time as various board members reiterate their position.  Hell last night we even had a board member come in with a written statement.  I don’t function well in that sort of environment and found myself doodling on a piece of paper quite a bit.

Apple released an update to their Iphone OS last week sometime, version 3.13.  It’s fix list was rather short, one of the things it supposedly did was address an issue where the 3GS would display inaccurate battery levels.  I installed it without thought, realizing the update meant little to my 3G phone.  Well I was wrong, this update had a huge effect on my phone, it KILLED my battery life.

All of a sudden my phone would be next to dead every morning after being fully charged the night before.  The battery life was cut in half at least if not more.  I have an older 3G model.  Ali has the newer 3GS yet she had the exact same problem.  Her battery life which was already poor went to atrocious overnight.

Doing a quick search on the net revealed that we were far from alone with our problem.  Tons of Iphone users had their battery life tank after applying 3.13.  I did some more digging looking for possible solutions (until Apple releases a patch to fix the patch)  There were some threads that indicated that somehow 3.13 screws up phones that are Activesynching with an Exchange server or any push email system.

The recommendation was to make sure that you didn’t have any open ended, recurring calendar items with no stop date.  It was also recommended that you disable the push email, restart the phone and then re-enable the push email.  I tried these suggestions yesterday.  I woke up this morning with my phone nearly dead once again. Grrrrrrr.  I guess more investigation is in order.  Until it’s rectified I need an Iphone charger on hand at all times.

I have bought some clothes for both myself and my dad from a great place, Duluth Trading.  They make rugged, durable clothing that is A+ quality.  For Christmas I bought my dad a shirt that is made from the same material that they use to cover fire hoses.  Their catalog is jammed full of great items that any guy (or girl) that works hard would appreciate.  They also have a bunch of old throwback items that I think are very cool.  Take a look, you won’t be disappointed.

I have reenabled the lightbox feature for images.  I’m hoping it doesn’t break the blog for some people like it did in the past.  They released an updated version. Simply click on the image and watch the magic.

Babysat, frozen watch, deeper cut, deception, silenced

Ali offered up my services to watch Michelle’s two little boys while the girls went for a run.  Of course she asked me after she mentioned the possibility to Michelle.  I was fine with it, my only issue with babysitting would be diaper parameters.  One of the boys is still in diaper age, having never changed a diaper in my life, I would much prefer if I had a guide if that situation presented itself.  Michelle said that he should be fine and if for some reason there was a “deposit” made in the diaper bank he would be fine until they returned, they weren’t planning on running a huge distance.

I’m not sure if I have done solo babysitting ever, if I did I don’t remember it. I figured how hard could it be to babysit two little boys, they like to play, I like to play, easy enough. Parker already had an agenda ready for me, we were going to make a “fort” and play the Memory Card game inside of it.  Our fort was comprised of various cushions from the couches and several blankets.

It was my job to construct the fort.  It took some trial and error until I came up with a system to keep the flimsy “walls” and ceiling in place.  Once the fort was up  Parker and Spencer crawled in.  Spencer (the youngest) enjoyed just crawling into the fort and climbing out the back door on top of the sofa.  Parker lugged his memory game into the fort and dumped it on the floor.  He encouraged me to join him in the fort and start the game.  Now of course I didn’t fit but I managed to get my upper body in the one opening.  With the aid of a small flashlight we started the game.

The object of the game is simple, you lay out all the cards face down and then flip over two at a time, the object is to find matching pairs by remembering where pairs are located.  We played a modified version of the game where I flipped over the cards and when I found matches I gave them to Parker.  He preferred this version.

As we played both kids would have their attention drift to the cartoons playing on Nickelodeon.  A few times Spencer would be saying stuff that I had to have Parker translate for me.  I managed to figure out he wanted some animal crackers.

As we were playing the fort kept getting damaged from all of the climbing around.  Each time a wall or ceiling came down I rebuilt it.  Then the game started to mutate.  I started setting up “traps” to prevent the kids from escaping out the back of the fort. The traps consisted of extra pillows or blankets the kids had to break through.  Once they broke through they would run around a table, into the front of the fort and try to escape again.

They found this incredibly fun.  Each time Parker would escape one of my traps he would proclaim he “ruined” it!  It was very funny.  The boys just kept circling and circling, getting trapped and then ruining it.  This continued all the way till the girls returned from their run.  They came home to find two sweaty little boys with cheeks flushed red from all of the running around.

Michelle was glad to hear that the boys had fun and that no major disasters occurred.  I told her it was no problem, we had fun.  Of course on the way home Ali asked if playing with the boys made me feel more like having my own.  Without hesitation I said, “nope”.  I’m sure that was an underlying motivation for offering up my babysitting services.  Ali and I still have not had that sit down kid discussion in case you can’t tell.

As I mentioned last week, I was receiving pressure from Randall and Jeremy to complete a 300 workout before I went back under the knife on Monday.  I had just bought the Olympic bar and weights earlier in the week so I had all the stuff to do one.  Of course I would have much preferred to video tape a 300 only after I did some serious training.  If I had the six weeks of time they did to train hard for it as they did (and didn’t) it would most certainly have improved what I could do significantly. On top of my lack of training the weather was rather shitty with temps in the 50’s with tons of wind.

Regardless, my people pleasing instincts took over as I drug out the camcorder and weights.  I set the Olympic bar up in an area where I would not be easily seen from the neighbors on either side.  I didn’t want them to know just how odd I am.  I tried to get everything in position so I would be able move from exercise to exercise with minimal delay for equipment set up.

I set the camcorder up knowing that the howling wind would make hearing next to impossible.  I offered up a brief video introduction of the event and then got started.

I have been doing 300 work outs for a couple years however due to limitations with equipment at the gyms I did them at, I never was able to do what would technically be considered a regulation 300.  Sure I’ve done many, many 300 rep sessions, actually I have done 10’s of thousands of reps.  The workouts made a huge difference in my fitness level regardless of the limitations.

The limitations were basically in two areas, pull ups and box jumps.  At Powerhouse they only had enough steps to reach 20.5 inches of total height for my box jumps, 3 1/2 inches shy of regulation height.  Those few inches make a big difference when doing 50 repetitions.

The pull up bar wasn’t a bar at all, instead it was a split handle that was part of an assisted pull up/dip station.  The station had a two foot high step to allow people to use the equipment.  As a result I had a narrow little channel where my body would hang to pull up.  If I swung back and forth at all my legs would have been hitting those steps.  To minimize that swing I did quicker, shorter pull ups that did not generate as much back and forth momentum.  I had no “bar” to put my chin over so instead I used the mirror in front of me, my rule was if I got my upper arms to do at least a 90 degree angle to my body it was “good”.    I also did not drop all the way down as i would have hit my feet on the ground, I didn’t have room to even bend my legs much.  By strict pull up definition my reps were not close to what they should be, admittedly, a by product of the equipment.

Well I had no such limitations with my home 300 layout.  I had a regulation pull up bar I constructed with my own two hands as well the full 24 inch jumping station.  This would be my first ever attempt doing a 300 with those big changes, again with no real 300 training for months except my expanded pull up routine.

After starting the camera for the single take shot I started the stop watch and started the routine.  Doing the pull ups with full range of motion obviously makes the exercise much more difficult.  Instead of being able to do the first set of 25 in one quick rapid fire set I had to break it down into a set of 15 followed by two quick 5 rep sets.  It took me 2:29 to complete.

The next exercise was dead lifts.  Although 135 pounds is not a ton of weight to lift once, it is 50 times.  I can’t quite remember if I broke the reps into 30,20 or 30,10,10.  Because of my extremely long arms when I DL it’s all arms and hips.

After dead lifts I was definitely breathing hard but I didn’t wait very long until starting the next exercise, push ups.  There is one disadvantage to doing push ups, it’s hard to see your form unless you are in a spot that has mirrors to the floor (or you are video taping yourself).  I knocked out the 50 push ups in rapid succession.  As I was doing them my chest and nose were at ground level on the down stroke and it felt like elbows were close to straight on the up.  However when reviewing the video it was obvious that I didn’t go up as far as I should have.  I even pointed it out on the video with a caption.

I was still feeling pretty good after the push ups and was on pace to do the circuit in less than 30 minutes.  The next exercise was box jumps.  Not only was this the first time I did a 300 with full height box jumps, it also was the first time I did them with full extension at the end of each jump as Jeremy requested.  The combination of the two ratcheted up the difficulty level enough that my first set stopped at 25.  I was finally getting warm enough that I could lose the sweatshirt, my body was putting out enough heat of it’s own.

By the time I completed my 50th jump I was getting quite tired and my least favorite exercise of the bunch was coming up, the floor wipers.  Floor wipers are a pain in the ass for me, again because of the length of my appendages.  Giraffe legs with big feet on the end of them requires a lot of leverage to lift.  I knocked out the wipers in 4 chunks of 20,10,10 and 10 reps.  There have been times when I did the exercise in only two sets of 35 and 15 reps. Saturday was not one of those days.

I was now tired, my breaks were getting longer.  Not nearly as long as the breaks Jeremy took but long enough that I knew that breaking the 30 minute mark was now a fading reality.  Next up was the 35 pound c&p.  This exercise requires a 35 pound weight to go from the ground to overhead.  After doing the first set of 25 I started feeling sick in the stomach, after switching sides and doing the other 25 a headache also started to make itself known, surely a sign of the extreme exertion that my body was not accustomed to at this point.

Even though I was still sweating I actually started to feel cold.  Cold enough that I put my sweatshirt back on before starting on the last set of pull ups.  I dreaded this last set.  My energy meter was hovering near zero.  I broke the last 25 reps into sets of 10,5,5 and 5, each with rest periods that were progressively longer, I was just spent.

Finally the  last pull up was completed.  I barely had the energy to walk over and announce the final time which was 40:41.  Approximately 18 minutes faster than Randall and close to half the time it took Jeremy.  After stopping the camera I was not feeling well.  I laid down on the mat with the barbell still overhead and closed my eyes.  I laid there for at least a solid 10 minutes until the nausea settled down.  The blue rubber yoga mat felt warm and comforting  as it absorbed the heat from the sun.

I wasted no time getting the video roughly edited and up on youtube.  If you would like to see my efforts here is a link to the full video and a shortened version where rest periods are trimmed out.  I apologize in advance for the wind noise.

Sunday morning we had a race to time.  I gave Ali an early Valentine’s Day present and told her I would time this one myself.  It was supposed to be very cold Sunday morning (low 40’s) and this race was small enough that I should be able to handle all the timing duties myself. Ali would have been miserable sitting out in that cold regardless of what she wore.

It was indeed miserable.  Last year we had all sorts of problems with this race, it was disorganized and riddled with poor communication.  The race day was a nightmare of screw ups that culminated with us having to line up all of the runners after the race and reenter their information after we discovered we were fed an entry file with inaccurate information.

This year it was better but far from perfect.  I had requested that a rope be run between two of the support beams in the registration area so I could hang signs to direct runners to the proper area.  I asked that the string was hung somewhere around 7-8 feet high.  Well the string was hung but it was hung at the back of the structure where it wasn’t needed and it was hung about 20 feet high, unreachable and unusable.  I just had to laugh when I saw it.

We had another snafu.  When runners sign in they are given a bib and 4 safety pins to attach the bib to their shirt.  I was going to drive to the running store on Saturday to pick up the pins but I was told that another club member who was going to be stopping by the store anyway would be given the pins and take them to the race.  I had a bit of uneasiness not handling this myself as I knew that was the only way I could be SURE I have them. Well you guessed it, he forgot them.

He had his wife grab them and bring them to the race site.  In the meantime we had to tell runners to come back later for their pins.  Luckily since it was a small race it wasn’t that huge of a deal.  The registration area was hectic once again.  I became the default source for answers, even if I didn’t know what the answers were.  I had to hurriedly assign various volunteers to handle certain duties while I got the computer set up to take entries.

I was fricking freezing.  I had on jeans, a t-shirt, a long sleeve t-shirt, a hooded sweatshirt and a zip up insulated hooded sweatshirt, thin work gloves and my Eagles beanie and I was still cold.  I soon discovered that you can’t work a touchpad on a laptop with gloves on.

Once the race started I headed right up to the finish area which I hadn’t even touched yet.  Luckily it was a 10 mile race so I had plenty of time to get the timing equipment up and running.  The first runner crossed in 55 minutes and change, a smoking pace.  The timing went smoothly once again.  Even once the sun got higher in the sky I still felt chilled to the bone, I didn’t really warm up until I baked in the heat of the truck on the way home.

When I got home I told Ali she should be glad she wasn’t out there. While she got to skip the cold she was keeping herself busy at home, knocking out the chores I would have had to do otherwise which I appreciated very much.

It was hard to remember it was Valentine’s Day since I started my day at 4am in the cold.  When I got back I asked Ali if she wanted to open her gift I got her from Red Envelope, a silver necklace with a silver heart with a blue topaz pendant (her birthstone).  She appeared to like the gift which I was happy to see. It’s hard to come up with gifts after this many years.  She didn’t explicitly buy me anything but I had proclaimed that my purchase of my weight set was my gift earlier in the week which I was more than happy with.

I asked Ali repeatedly if she wanted to go out to dinner that night but after telling me for the third or forth time she actually would prefer to just hang out at home I relented.  So hang out we did, it was fine with me.

Monday I got to enjoy getting my left upper arm sliced into for the second time in a month.  The procedure was very similar to the first time except I had two trips into the office.  The first time they cut me open and take out some tissue deeper in my arm.  They then test the tissue on the spot to verify they got all the cancerous cells.  If they did they can sew you back up, if they didn’t they cut out more.  Luckily for me they got it all the first time in.  The only negative was I had to wait 2 hours until they sewed me back up completely as they had other appointments in between.

I knew how it went so I brought some reading material with me, Deception Point, one of the Dan Brown books I had not read yet. (more on that later).  The incision this time is in the same spot although it was slightly longer in length.  There also are significantly more stitches holding it together.

I spent the rest of my Monday relaxing.  I played some WoW and spent a lot of time getting deeper into the book.  I love Dan Brown books but I always am hesitant to read one.  Why?  Because once I start I am compelled to read it endlessly until I am done because I get sucked into the story.  This book was no different, I found the story line very interesting although very similar to all of his other books which are filled with mysterious premises that are riddled with twists and head fakes that keeps the reader guessing.

The very first few pages disturbed me deeply.  It described a geologist who was abducted with his team of sled dogs by military agents.  They were taken up thousands of feet in a cargo plane.  Brown described a horrific scene where the sled was pushed out of the plane with the dogs still attached.  It created a terrible image in my head which stuck with me much more than the description of when the geologist met the same fate.

I am in the home stretch of the book that I just started on Monday, I should wrap it up tonight before bed.

On Tuesday I planned to work some more on the water system since I had success with improving the water quality the prior weekend.  This time I hoped to fix the problem with holding tank losing pressure which was causing the pump to keep cycling on and off every few seconds to maintain pressure.

I had tried to address this weeks ago by caulking around the lip where I found air leaking.  The caulk didn’t hold.  It looked like there was rust around the lip.  Well I thought I would strip the caulk away, drain the tank and hit it with super glue instead.  However before I broke the seal on the tube of glue I reconsidered, knowing that once I did that, trying to remove the top of the tank would be nearly impossible.

I decided to just bite the bullet and call the well company.  I asked if they had anyone available to come out today since I was off from work.  They said they could have somewhere there by the afternoon.  They did even better than that, their van pulled up at 11:45, less than two hours after I called.

I instantly recognized the guy, he was the same guy that installed the system after Wilma in 2005.  I knew he was cool, he was the guy that came up with the line that “every year after 50 is like a dog year”

I took him over to the equipment and showed him the leak.  The fix for the problem was rather simple and one I could have done myself if I had a bigger slip joint pliers.  He drained the tank and then used his huge pliers to loosen and remove the big gray fitting under which the air was escaping.  I had tried to do that previously but didn’t have the torque to get it done.  After removing the fitting he found some surface rust that he simply ground away with a flat file.  He also cleaned up the surface of the gray fitting.  After the clean up he sprayed both surfaces with a silicone gasket material, reattached the fitting and cranked it tight.  He re-pressurized the tank and the pressure gauge remained rock solid, awesome.

Like I said, I could have easily done the same thing with better tools but it only cost $94 to have him come out.  Now I know what to do in the future.  While he was there I also asked him about whole house RO.  They sold the systems and they cost $6500.  He had an RO system at his place and he loved it.  He also gave me some details that made installation sound less troublesome than some of the reports I got from my neighbor who had a system installed a couple years ago.

I had heard a few negatives like to make 1 gallon of RO water there was 12 or 13 gallons of waste water required.  That is a TON of waste water that would have to go somewhere.  The repairman said the newer systems are not as wasteful, typically using 3-4 gallons of waste to make 1-2 gallons of good stuff.

I also had heard the filters had to be swapped out every couple of months.  Supposedly there are new larger filters that can go much longer in between changes.  He said they have been using a new filter for 6 months so far and it still is ok.

Finally I heard that the equipment pretty much HAS to be inside or under cover.  The installer said his RO system was installed outside and although it is preferable to have it sheltered as it will last longer, it isn’t a requirement.

I thanked him for the info, paid the bill and he was on his way.  I guess the next step is to see if the water quality remains good.  If it does, we may try to squeeze another year out of it.  The true test is to fill a tub with water and see how it looks which I haven’t done yet.

It was nice to be able to sit outside and read my book without hearing the water pump cycling every 20 seconds.

The rest of my Tuesday was very relaxed.  I enjoyed the chocolate cake Ali very thoughtfully made for me as a get well offering, read dozens of chapters of the book and played WoW.

Back to the grind today but a three day week isn’t too hard to hack.

Four days

I have four days off coming up.  We already get President’s Day off but since I will be getting cut open that day I decided to take Tuesday off as well.

We have a race to time this weekend, Valentine’s day no less.  I’d like to try to get out for a dinner for Ali over the weekend as well.  I’m sure I’ll find plenty of items around the house to keep me occupied.

My work on the water system last weekend has continued to appear productive.  Not only has the water coming out of the tap looked significantly better, the softness is starting to return as well.  I also noticed that the granite composite sink in the kitchen isn’t getting that glazed, faded look like it has since we put it in.  It would be a cool thing if we didn’t have to drop the entire tax refund on a water system if we don’t have to.  I still do have an issue with the holding tank losing pressure, maybe I’ll take a shot at that again this weekend.

Since I now have all of the equipment necessary to do a 300 at home I have been “encouraged” by Randall and Jeremy to do a 300 before I am once again shelved by the surgery.  I am hesitant to do one since I haven’t done a single 300 since December and I haven’t done any serious consistent 300 training for probably 6 months.  They are hoping that due to those circumstances that my time would be closer to theirs which ranged from 60-75+ minutes.  The opportunity to show them that even in “bad” 300 shape I could still best their efforts is tempting for sure.  We’ll see how I feel.
