Boston

So as the rest of the country/world, I was shocked by the news of a bomb(s) going off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon yesterday afternoon.  By the time the evening was over I had seen the finish line camera video of the first bomb going off dozens of times. I had seen it enough.

Another thing I have seen enough are the words “senseless tragedy” in news headlines.  It is very sad just how often a situation merits that description in the very f’d up world we live in today. Targeting a famous marathon, filled with some of the best humanity has to offer, as an opportunity to create chaos and destruction is beyond the scope of most people’s imagination.

Of course the news media is now scrambling to dig into every nook and cranny of the tragedy, trying to come up with one sensational headline after another.  I wish I could trust the media to give me an accurate representation of what actually transpires but that trust has been broken long ago.

Our local running community had a number of people up in Boston doing the event.  Luckily none of them were hurt from the explosions.  Unfortunately a number of people were, including three deaths and another 150 hurt, some losing limbs in the process from the shrapnel.  I can’t even fathom going to a running event as a spectator and leaving it as a cripple.

Needless to say the events yesterday are going to be like dropping a bucket in a pond, the ripples are going to be expanding outward, affecting event security and security in general through out the country.  The reality is there is just no way you can protect the world completely from every possible threat.

We live in a dangerous, violent world.  You can decide to hide in fear or go out and live life.  Everyone dies sometime, I’d rather do it moving full steam ahead than cowering in a corner.
