Lucky again, grooming, fantasy draft
It looks like we may have gotten lucky again. As late as last night, Katrina was supposed to cut right across the state and practically go right over our house. Instead it veered SW and is sitting below us right now. It seems like all the rain is on the bottom half of the storm so when I left for work this morning it was windy but the driveway was bone dry. We still will get some rain and it will be windy but nothing nearly as severe as it could have been.
As I have gotten older there have been more things that need to be addressed on a regular basis when it comes to grooming. One of those things are the eyebrows. It seems that I have to knock those things back more and more often. Before I know it I have bushy beasts back above my eyes and I have to weed whack them again. I used to have Ali trim them using a scissors but I found that it didn’t do a good enough job on knocking down the thickness of them. So now my technique goes like this, get one of those fine tooth, black combs and use it to comb against the grain of the hair so it sticks out. Use the beard trimmer part of my electric shaver to knock down the eyebrows, hedge trimmer style and then use it without a comb to buzz off the few stray hairs in between the brows. The comb acts like a safety, preventing me from accidentally buzzing off a portion of an eyebrow down to the skin. I notice more and more gray hairs in my eyebrows. In fact those are often the longest ones. Getting old is just wonderful.
I am getting into a fantasy football league this year again. However this year I am in a REAL league where you spend a couple hundred bucks up front and in exchange can win decent cash throughout the season. Of course the stakes are now raised and all decisions gain a new level of importance. Well last night was the draft for our league. It was held in a conference room of a Wachovia office building. The accomodations were very nice except for one thing. In an effort to save energy, the buildings AC automatically turns off at night. It got very warm in there very quickly. I only knew a handful of the 12 people that are in the league. Most people seemed cool. As I scan the room I see that almost everyone has 2 or 3 fantasy football magazines, spreadsheets, injury reports and other draft preparation materials. I had one piece of paper and a pen. On the paper I simply had a list of the players available. Oh well, I planned to do my draft like I do many other things in life, making decisions with little planning and instead relying on my instinct. I had the number 8 draft position. Most of the real big names were snapped up right away and it soon came to be my turn. Without hesitation I announced my first pick, Julius Jones of the Cowboys. Immediately there is noise around the room. Outright mocking of the pick came from a few. Evidently many of the magazines had Jones listed as a 3rd round selection. Well I was convinced Jones will be the best back in the NFC this year so I picked him. I will be happy to remind the other owners of their mockery when Julius is running wild. The draft was long, many owners had long delays when it came to their pick, they would be pouring over the vast piles of data before producing their pick. In contrast, when it was my pick I immediately produced my selection. I either came off as very confident in my picks or very stupid for not taking much time to make them. My team so far goes like this:
Trent Green QB
Joey Harrington QB
Lamant Jordan RB
Julius Jones RB
Cadillac Williams RB
TJ Duckett RB
Roy Williams WR
Nate Burleson WR
Jerry Porter WR
Keyshawn Johnson WR
Bubba Franks TE
S Graham K
Redskins D
Panthers D
I have one more selection to make via free agency. I was a bit bummed I didn’t get a chance to pick up any Eagles but it just didn’t work out timing wise. I feel good about my selections and I can’t wait to lay down some smack, especially to my detractors. My team is call GREEN MACHINE. Here is the helmet with logo I made.
The draft didn’t get done till after 10. When I got home I was tired but noticed the wind was already picking up from Katrina. Ali was worried about having to try to pick stuff up this morning with wind and rain so we went outside at 11pm and did whirlwind hurricane prep. We cleared the lanai and I put away possibile wind projectiles around the property. I didn’t get to bed till close to midnight. I’m a bit sleepy today.
The weekend was supposed to include volleyball on Saturday but the tournament was cancelled. So it should be pretty standard stuff. I am hoping to convince Ali to go to the casino with me on Saturday night. They are giving away a car but you have to be present to win. 🙂
