Remembering

On the way to the gym I heard an old Van Halen song.  For a few moments I found myself back in 1985 driving my split pea green 1969 Buick Special Deluxe.  One of the first things I did when my mom so kindly turned the keys over to me was to install an Audiovox radio/cassette player along with two 9 inch oval speakers that I installed on the rear seat deck by the trunk.  I had two tapes that I played to death during those first few months, Van Halen & Billy Idol.

I recall turning the volume up as high as it could go without distortion, rolling the windows down and just cruising the greater metropolitan Shillington area with pride. I desperately wanted to make my car more like a muscle car since several of my friends had SS Novas, Camaros and Chevelles.  The radio was the first of several “cool” upgrades I performed.  Air shocks, seat covers, wire wheel hub caps and a set of nearly bald tires rounded out the performance upgrades.

The balding tires allowed my 250 cubic inch inline 6 motor to kind of do a burn out if I slammed it into drive while revving the motor. If I slammed it into reverse the burnout was significantly better.  Of course the bald tires also was the cause of my hydroplaning incident in a hard rain storm that caused me to slide into oncoming traffic wrecking my Buick as well as 4 or 5 other cars in the process.  Kids are so dumb.

Kicking my ass

I did another EA Active session last night.  It was basically a plyometrics session, cripes.  Squat jumps, split lunge jumps, jumping ramps in inline skating, my legs were dead by the end of it.  Like I said, I think the bottom half of my body lags behind the top half as far as attention goes.  I am hoping that discrepancy lessens over time.

So Sadie is back on the white rice and boiled chicken diet until her diarrhea subsides.  Luckily last night Sadie made it through the night without any incidents.  I pray it clears up before we leave.

I heard last night was Conan’s first as the new host of the Tonight Show.  Of course I never stay up late enough to watch it.  I’m curious about both how he will do as well as how well Jay will do moving to 10pm.  I suspect not that great in either case.

More, Kirstie Alley sucks

On Sunday I took a stab at adjusting the gear train on my road bike.  Certain gears are noisy and feel like they are not properly aligned.  So armed with the Shimano instructions and a screw driver I sat down with the bike.  Not having a bike stand to work on the bike is a bit of PIA.  To shift the gears I had to lift the bike off the ground with one arm while trying to clumsily spin the crank with the other.  Having no experience in doing this it was mostly trial and error.  I tweaked it a bit, would hop on the bike and ride around a bit to see if it was any better.  I was definitely able to change the shifting behavior with the adjustments, unfortunately it didn’t seem to be for the better.

Finally after about 45 minutes of screwing around with it I had it back to pretty much the state when I started.  Most gears were ok but a couple were noisy.  I need to just haul it to a bike shop and let a pro set the thing up.

Sadie was the cause of a very restless nights sleep last night.  Around 1 am I was awakened by her on the bed.  She seemed to be very unsettled.  She was moving around a bit and seemed to be up by my head.  I recall her jamming her snot covered nose into my arm.  Then she left out a huge sneeze which set me off.  I pushed her and told her to “KNOCK IT OFF”  She jumped off the bed and I hoped that was the end of it, I was too tired for her crap.

Well as I was trying to fall back asleep she jumped up again and was being an annoyance.  I was too groggy to acknowledge it but evidently Ali thought something may be up and took her out.  My eyes remained closed as I desperately tried to fall back asleep.  Well when I woke up this morning I saw the sofa bed was pulled out.  When I asked Ali what went down she said that when she took Sadie out she had diarrhea and threw up some, great.  Well I guess the good news is she woke us up instead of shitting by my face.  I woke up feeling like death this morning.

I watched part of an Oprah with Ali that had Kirstie Alley on.  She was talking about her immensely fat, to fat back to immensely fat roller coaster of the last few years. Remember all the big to do when she came out in with her “bikini body” to show off her weight loss? (an insult to bikinis worldwide)  She was still very heavy but from where she started it was an improvement at least.  Her public weight loss landed her a job as a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig, an added perk.

Well shortly after the famous bikini Oprah episode Kirstie fell off the wagon and managed to gain  every single pound back and then some.  She was dropped as a spokesperson for Jenny C.  She filmed a spot recently for the Oprah show that documented that she was moving the workout equipment back into her house again.  This time she was going to do it.

Well when Kirstie was on the show this time she admitted that although the workout equipment is in the house she hasn’t gotten around to using it yet.  As the interview progressed I found myself getting more and more disgusted with this woman as she made jokes about her weight gain and how she let down the people that viewed her as an inspiration as she laughed out loud.  Then she comes out and tells Oprah that she is working on her own fitness secret. She wants to get healthy “her way” (translation – take a pill or a fad diet) She whispers that she has lost 20 pounds in the last 4 weeks on it but she couldn’t reveal her “secret” until it is ready to be sold to the public. I mean WTF, that is like Hitler pitching a self improvement dvd.

That was all I could take.  The idea that this pathetic glutton was going to try to profit on her fame from failure by pushing some sort of weight loss pill on the public is disgusting.  I was crawling out of my skin at this point and asked Ali if we could fast forward through the rest of that pig’s segment and move on to the story of the 1100 pound man that got down to 200 pounds only to balloon back up to 1000 pounds later.  At least he takes it seriously.

Kirstie Alley is right at the top of my biggest celebrity loser list.  She is in the elite company of Miley Cyrus, Michael Jackson and  David Hasselhoff.

Calm before the storm

Of course overshadowing any weekend recaps is my mom losing her job on Friday.  She was not alone, in total they laid off seven people that day.  Basically business has been in the crapper for quite a long time.  Mom had expressed concern about the stability of her job to me over the last few months but I never thought it was a real possibility.  Mom is good at sales.  I guess I figured that was enough to insulate her from the chopping block. I was wrong.

Of course mom is very upset.  Mom said the last time she was “fired” from a job was when she was 15.  She now finds herself in the middle of a pool of uncertainty which does not sit well with mom who is most comfortable in an established daily routine.  She already started the ball rolling by filing for unemployment.  I was surprised to find out that no matter how much money you make, the most you can collect from unemployment is around $250-$275 a week.  Imagine if you were a six figure middle manager in a company and got laid off?

Of equal if not larger concern is how to handle the health insurance issue.  Mom can pick up Cobra to extend her health benefits.  However going this route is very expensive, in fact it could potentially eat at least half of what she could collect via unemployment.  Luckily, Ali heard about one of the side benefits of the monster stimulus package.  There are now provisions that will subsidize part of the Cobra expense, up to 65% of it which would be a huge help.

Of course the ideal sequence of events would be Mom simply finds another job that pays around the same amount of money.  Three or four years ago that would not have been very hard to do.  Today it is a very daunting task.  Her job was a great fit for her in many ways, it offered a hefty salary instead of being mostly commission, had good hours (for sales) and was very close to where she lives.  Finding those qualities in her next employer will be tough.

On the positive side, Mom has a decent stash in her savings to supplement what unemployment doesn’t cover.  She is getting two weeks severance pay and supposedly they will cover her under their insurance until the end of June.  If Mom would happen to be unemployed for a prolonged period of time she found out that starting in November she could start collecting social security benefits which would further help lessen the financial pinch.

Of course whatever we can do to help mom out during this time will be done.  It would be great if she got lucky and managed to snag a new job sooner rather than later.  However if it turns out to be a long term situation we will find a way to work it all out.  Mom’s biggest issue may be not going stir crazy without a job to go to 5 days a week.

I decided that I was not going to mow the grass this weekend despite it starting to take on a jungle appearance.  Instead I wanted to wait and mow it just before we leave.  I figured it was a more efficient use of the effort.  So Saturday morning I knocked out a bunch of outside chores including tending to the garden.  I pulled a massive zucchini out that was hiding under some big leaves.  I couldn’t believe the size of the thing.  We also have some massive squash coming in.  One of them is about the size of a nerf football at this point.

I called mom and asked her if she wanted me to stop and bring over Subway for lunch. Ali was staying behind because she was sick.  I wanted to get over to her place to set up a laptop that she could use for internet access. Yes my mom actually is accustomed to using the internet now.  It’s something she finally got to get comfortable with at her job.  My plan was since she lives in a condo complex, there surely has to be some open wireless internet routers in the vicinity.

When I first fired up the laptop I saw no wireless networks, shit.  Then I disconnected the power cord and walked to the front of the condo with the laptop and scanned again. Bingo, it found an open network although the signal strength was very low.  I was able to connect to it but the signal was so marginal the connection kept dropping out.  Mom suggested we try out on the lanai since there are houses out that way.  I saw a different wireless network there and thankfully once again it was unsecured.

I was able to get a solid albeit slow connection.  I set up mom with an email address off my duf.net domain space.  We reconfigured her Facebook, set up her home page and verified she understood the process of logging on to the laptop.  The internet will be a big help for mom as far as the job search process goes as well as getting answers about the unemployment and Cobra process.  I asked mom if she wanted to come back with me and hang out at our place.  She was worried about catching what Ali has and being sick for her visit out west with my sister.

Mom thanked me for getting her online.  I reassured her that things will work out and not to worry although I am sure the worry on her part is probably non-stop.  It doesn’t make me happy to see mom bent out of shape like that.  I can’t help but have a rather large chip on my shoulder towards her former employer for reasons I’d rather not throw out into the public airwaves.

Ali had been resting for a good portion of the time I was away.  She has been sick for a few days.  Everyone knows it isn’t much fun to be sick or be in the house with a sick person.  Of course first of all I am crossing my fingers that I don’t catch what she has.  It would suck to be behind the wheel of the party van 8-10 hours a day while feeling like shit.  Second when you are sick you are generally miserable.  When you are miserable there is a good chance that anyone else in your close proximity is going to have some of that rub off on them.  It’s no fun for anyone.

Well I unfortunately had to call Ali into duty to help me repair another screen panel in the pool cage that ripped along the spline.  Another reminder of the shitty work that we paid 17k for.  I needed Ali to be the screen holder while I pressed the new spline in place.  Luckily since we replaced 5 panels a few months ago the process went smoothly.  I even thought to reattach and tighten the tension wire before securing the bottom spline in the screen to avoid getting any slack in the screening.  Ali was not happy being out there with me because she felt so shitty.  I appreciated her help.

Even though she was sick, Ali had plans to make a fancy eggplant parm with ingredients that were almost entirely out of our garden including eggplant, tomatoes, zucchini, and potatoes.  The last time Ali tried to incorporate eggplant into a dish she had a hard time getting the bitterness out of the eggplant.  Well this time she did a fantastic job, it turned out great.  We both enjoyed it.

Saturday evening even though I was quite tired from a day full of activity I wanted to fire up EA Active and get a workout in.  I knew that in order to meet my goal for the week I had to get some work in.  I have been feeling residual soreness from doing EA Active.  The arches of my feet are very sore from doing tons of running in place up on my toes.  My legs and knees are feeling it as well after doing tons of lunges.  I was not very happy when I saw that one of the exercises in today’s workout was explosive side to side jumps.  I am hoping as I continue to use it regularly my lower body starts to catch up with my upper body.

I got to run through the baseball activity in the game.  Unfortunately unlike Wii Sports there is no option for lefties so I wound up having to do everything right handed.  I am mildly ambidextrous so doing so was not that difficult.  There are fielding, pitching and batting drills.  They are fast paced, simple and fun.  I can’t wait until Ali gets healthy again so we can go through some workouts together.

My Sunday was not all that busy.  I put new wipers on the party van as well as scrubbing off  the residual bug guts on the windshield from the trip to Orlando.  Over the weekend I also vacuumed the van out, had Ali wash the bedding and removed one of the captain chairs to give us additional storage space for our copious amounts of junk that will accompany us on the trip.

I finally got around to watching Caprica, the 2 hour tv movie from the creators of Battlestar Galactica.  It is the start of a new series.  The backdrop for the show is roughly 50 years before the Cylons nuke mankind.  The intent is to document the events that lead up to that moment, how the Cylons came to be and what turned them against man.  When the show first started I was scratching my head a bit, I had no idea how what I was seeing had anything to do with the creation of cylons.  However it didn’t take too long until the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place.  By the end of it I had that familiar yearning for it not to end like I had from the BSG series.  I really am looking forward to the series starting in the fall.  With the announced death of the Terminator TV series it may be the only thing on TV that I REALLY would want to see.

Ali made another homemade creation on Sunday, again using ingredients grown from our property, an apple crisp.  This year our apple tree has been putting out apples much larger and mature looking than in years past.  They are full size.  However we have a problem.  Once they start to turn red they are like a magnet for the birds that love to fly in and help themselves, damaging the fruit.  They do the same thing to our lemons.(homemade lemon juice was used in the dish too)  Ali decided to snag a bunch of big apples even though they were still mostly green.  When I tasted a few pieces while she was preparing the dish there wasn’t much sweetness in them, I was worried it may make for a less than ideal desert.  Well once again Ali did a bang up job, the final product was very good.  She gets an A+ for her cooking creations of the weekend.

I’ve been sucked into the  Jon & Kate fanfare.  I find it interesting seeing episodes from the original season and comparing them to this years run.  Kate has obviously run herself through the glamour mill since season 1.  The first season they were in the old house, Jon still worked his IT job (he later quit to become a full time reality star) and they had not isolated themselves from many of their friends and family as they have done now.  Yea Kate is still a bitch back in season one.  It’s easy to see the seeds that have lead up to the present day situation with Jon banging something on the side and Kate being more worried if her Victoria Beckham hairstyle is intact than if the kids are ok.

A couple years ago I posted about a tape I sent in to America’s Funniest Home videos was aired.  In the clip my ex-wife’s family was over and playing pinata in the living room.  The little girl took a big swing and instead of hitting the pinata she hit her uncle in the jewels.  Well evidently that clip is now in the all time funniest pinata montage rotation.  Last night we were watching the $100,000 finale show for this year for some reason. (we never watch live tv normally)  Well here comes a pinata montage.  Instantly I recognized the preceding clips and excitedly told Ali that my clip should be coming up once again.  A few moments later there it was, on national tv for all of two seconds.  I am simply amazed that something I shot around 20 years ago is still getting aired on the show.  Damn it where are my residuals?  If you would like to see the poor “shooting a camcorder at the tv” quality rip of the montage I did before you can see it here, it’s a Windows Media file.

Being on Facebook has allowed me to find out what has been going on with old classmates, teammates and friends I have not seen in ages, as long as two decades or more in some cases.  You never know how someone has turned out.  Sometimes things go as you imagined they would.  Sometimes the script is totally flipped from what you would expect.  I have one such case now.

I used to play baseball with a guy both in high school and summer leagues.  He was a very cool kid with good looks, a smooth demeanor along with being a good athlete.  I had not seen or heard from him since I took my last steps off a baseball field in the late 80’s.  If you would have asked me how I expected he would turn out I would have guessed as someone that would be a professional making six figures that spent years enjoying the swinging single life before settling down with the model quality wife years later.

Well once we reconnected via Facebook I saw things had not gone anything as I imagined.  He has been a minister for the past 10 years or so and a very outgoing, spread the gospel at every opportunity sort for that matter.  Many of his Facebook status updates are religious in nature spouting  praise of Jesus.  After one such post I made a comment that went like this “Odd place to profess it but I’m glad you are comfortable with your relationship with a higher being.”

There was no ill will meant by it, I just thought it was sort of bizarre to be professing this sort of stuff via Facebook status updates.  Well it triggered responses from both him and other people that were on the same plane as he is.  Most of it was very verbose and filled with more of the same sort of gospel.  I then simply asked if he had been born again. I suspected he was because based on my experience, born again individuals are often the most zealous when it comes to professing the word of the Lord.  That started another long diatribe that never really got me the answer I wanted.

Finally when I clarified my question by asking if he found God as an adult or was raised as a religious person I got verification that he came into the light as an adult.  Now of course anyone that knows me to any degree (or reads my blog) knows that I have a very skeptical view of a magical man in the sky that has his fingerprint on everything that happens on this planet.  However I don’t try to impress my feelings about it upon others.  If you want to worship Jesus or any other divine figure that is fine with me.  If doing so brings you happiness, contentment and security even better.  I just prefer to be going through the world with no seat belt in that regard.  Although it would be nice to have something good waiting for me when  clock winds down I just don’t think it is the ultimate reality.

The point of this rant?  Um I don’t know, I guess that it is an odd feeling to fast forward instantly in time in the life of an individual that you knew 20 years ago to present day.  All you have are the two points of reference with a whole bunch of white space in between.

Husky hound, Active

It seems like Sadie has really been living high on the hog since we adopted her.  When we first took her to the vet shortly after adopting her she weighed in at a lean 38 pounds.  A couple weeks ago she went back to the vet.  In a period of around 2 months she had gained 11 pounds! Wow.  That is like a 200 pound man jumping to 250 in the same period of time.

Well obviously we were surprised at the big gain.  We have started taking measures like cutting back on the amount of dry food she is getting, giving more healthy treats and trying to moderate their use.   When Sadie first showed up there was A LOT of running around the yard going on.  However now there is significantly less since Nicki has realized that she will never be able to catch Sadie.  Instead wrestling has taken over as the primary exercise they get.  They aren’t burning as many dog calories.  Ali and I both are conscious of Sadie’s new found heft so hopefully we can help her shave a few pounds off.

Last night I had my first, first hand work with EA Active.  I decided to do a “medium intensity” workout since Ali did the “low intensity” variety.  I found that my workout was basically identical to hers, I just had to do more repetitions of the same stuff.  The workout was varied and fast paced.  I used elastic bands and the Wii Fit board during the session.  By the time the 25 minutes was up I was sweated through my shirt.

Unlike Wii Fit where I chose a female trainer I decided to go the male trainer route this time.  The graphics in the game are far better than in Wii Fit or My Personal Trainer. The variety in EA Active is impressive.  Incorporating the Wii controllers into the exercises is a welcomed addition as you get immediate visual feedback on screen that you are doing an exercise correctly or incorrectly.  After I finished the workout I dug into the screens to see all of the exercises and activities, wow.  There are a TON of different things in there.  I messed around briefly with the basketball and tennis drills.  So far EA Active gets two big thumbs up from me.

Health = $

Yesterday after work I had to stop at Sam’s to get a few things, among them were various supplements that I take including glucosamine/chondrotin, fish oil capsules, and a big bottle of one a day multivitamins.  I also grabbed a double box of Zone bars as well as a couple bags of healthy dehydrated chicken breast treats for the dogs. Total bill, $138.  Add on top of that the 42 pack of Lean Body protein mix and the two bottles of flax seed oil I bought online last week and you can throw another $100 on top of the total.  Eating smart and supplementing is a smart thing to do if you value your health but there is no doubt that it is an expensive project.

Even in the grocery store you will notice that there is a price penalty normally when buying the healthier items.  Want more fiber, fewer carbs and less calories?  Be ready to pony up a few extra bucks. You can survive on Taco Bell and McD’s for much less.

We just had another county employee die recently of lung cancer.  Since I have been working here there have been three or four people that have passed away from the deadly disease.  It’s very sad to see someones light extinguished before their time because of the deadly addiction to smoking.  I think there is a lot of momentum towards making smoking more and more inconvenient between taxing cigarettes through the roof and banning smoking not only indoors but in some outdoor areas as well.  Sadly you can never save people from themselves.

Might as well…

On the way back from the movies I spotted a Chevy SSR with a single bumper sticker on the back.  It read (in white letters) “Keep the WHITE House WHITE”

To me, somebody that would drive around with this on their vehicle may as well team it with a “Please ignore me, I am a moron” tattoo in the middle of their forehead.

I am surprised there wasn’t a set of bull testicles hanging there as well.

Memorable Memorial Day weekend

Wow lots to cover, hopefully the details don’t fall through the cracks of my spotty memory. On Saturday we did a lot of stuff around the house.  Randall and his girlfriend were coming over on Sunday so we needed to get everything out of the way.  I skipped grass mowing so it saved a nice chunk of time.

On Saturday night we watched Yes Man, the Jim Carey romantic comedy flick.  It was a typical feel good sort of time.  It was enjoyable and forgettable, a solid B performer.

Saturday night I was up late, hell I  have been up late for most of the past week and I can tell.  I have felt rather run down.  Well anyway, that particular night I was up late because of WoW.  I was asked to come along with the guild to do a new raid instance.  I generally dislike raid instances.  In my experience they always lead to more frustration than fruit.  Well this was no exception.  When I was recruited to assist a time frame for the encounter was estimated at an hour.  Well it seems like whenever I am involved in one of these situations it never goes as planned.  They never start on time, they never get done when they are supposed to and more often than not my reward at the end of them is residual stress, frustration and a large repair bill.

It’s like a trap, you are in this encounter with 9 other people so even if you feel like leaving you feel obligated to stay till the end, else you could be giving the virtual shaft to the other 9 players.  Well in this situation I was clearly the weak link.  Since my gear was not as “epic” as everyone in the group I was not able to contribute equally.  After dying at least 10 times I had enough and just bailed shortly before midnight.  I just reached my limit.  I’m steering way clear of  raid instances.  I don’t think I ever came out of a raid feeling good about the time spent.

Sunday morning while Ali went to spinning class I finished up the work around the house.  I received an estimated ETA from Randall of  12:30 to 1 pm.  He called us during the trip saying he had hit a dead stop on Alligator Alley and wasn’t sure how late he would be.  It turned out that even with the delay he pulled into our place close to 1pm.

It was the first time Randall met Sadie.  Of course Sadie greeted Randall with much excitement.  It was also the first time he saw the new granite counters in person which he said looked great.   After Randall and Wendy ate lunch we talked about our game plan for the movies since that was the primary reason for his visit.  Randall had graciously volunteered to be my movie surrogate to watch the films that Ali decided she didn’t want to see.

So we formulated a plan to have Randall and I go watch Terminator while the girls would walk around Coconut Point.  I was surprised when we approached the theater and saw all of the Muvico branding had been removed and the place was now called “Hollywood Theater”  Evidently a huge new theater that only saw light use didn’t work out well in Muvico’s bottom line.  Since it was opening weekend for Terminator they were showing it every half hour.  Even though we arrived only 10-15 minutes before start time, the 250 seat theater had barely 50 people in it.  Randall and I were able to grab choice seats in the aisle that has limitless leg room.

So after sitting through double digit previews the film finally started.  I really was anxious to see the film, the previews for it looked simply fantastic.  Of course a film is rarely if ever as good as it’s previews.  Well once again Terminator somewhat missed my high expectations but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good.  It was very good for the most part.  The epic special effects, crazy action and suspense made the $7.50 ticket price well worth it.  The movie started to fall apart towards the end when a few rather ridiculous plot twists occur that just make you think they could have come up with a better way to do it.  I was surprised to see a CGI created Arnold appear in the flick.  They certainly didn’t use a modern day version of the Governor’s body which is rather dilapidated anymore.  This sort of reminded me of the way I felt about Iron Man, it was great movie with a silly ending. I’d give it an A, although on a Terminator scale I would probably rank it in third place behind the first two and ahead of the third installment.

After the movie we met back up with the girls.  Ali surprised me with a gift she bought for me from Best Buy, EA Active for the Wii. (more on that later)  We ate dinner at a small little place that had decent food.  After we got home it was time to fire up the Wii for some Wii Sports action.

The last time Randall was over we had some intense Wii Sports battles.  At that time I proved dominant in tennis and baseball, Randall took the bowling and golf crown.  Well I was hoping this time around I would pull a clean sweep, taking all 4 events.  Well instead things followed almost the exact same script.  I took tennis and baseball and Randall took the other two.  Wendy was a hell of a bowler as well, she rolled a 220 game in the process.  So I guess the lesson learned is I am better at sports where you hit a moving object and Randall prefers to hit stationary objects. 🙂

Randall brought his road bike with so we could do a ride sometime during the weekend.  We decided to get one in Monday morning before it got too hot.  Randall has a much higher end bike than I do.  He also aero bars to rest his forearms on as well as the cleat style pedals that locks you into the bike, allowing you to use your hamstrings on the up stroke instead of it being an all quad exercise.  We did the Publix ride,a 18.5 mile round trip.  Last week the ride took me 1:14.  Well having Randall in front as the pacer made a big difference in my speed.  Even on the ride back when we went into the wind I was going much faster than the week prior.

For most of the ride I was able to keep up with Randall however on the ride back I had to relent and drop a gear which made me fall back quite a way.  Randall eventually noticed I had faded and slowed down.  Even with my fading, overall we covered the distance much faster than my solo effort a week ago, a full 10 minutes faster.

As we were getting home the girls were in the van getting ready to pull out which we didn’t expect.  They said they were going to go to the track to get a quick run in.  Cool, I am never one to gripe about exercise, go knock yourself out.  Randall and I jumped into the pool to cool off from the ride.  Sadie was thrilled to have two people in the pool at once to play the splash game.  Within a few minutes she was soaked from head to toe and loving it.  The girls came back and joined us pool side.

Ali initially was refusing to jump into the 80 degree pool water, claiming it was too cold.  Eventually she relented and jumped in for a couple minutes.  She admitted it wasn’t horribly cold but not warm enough for her to spend extended time in the water.  Wendy dove in as well for awhile.

I wasn’t really sure what we were going to do the rest of the day.  I didn’t know if Randall wanted to venture back out to the movies or not.  Well as we ate our Memorial Day burgers from the grill he said he would be down with going to see Star Trek, cool.  This time the girls stayed at home while we ventured back out solo.

This time we got there even later.  We learned our lesson from the day before and instead of dropping $5 for a bottle of water we smuggled water in.  Even though we arrived later we still had no problems getting good seats for Star Trek.  I was VERY tired and sleepy before the flick started from the late night of Wii Sports followed by the bike ride and pool time earlier in the day.

Much like Terminator, the new Star Trek prequel looked fantastic in the previews.  I have never been a hard core Trekkie but I always enjoyed both the original and Next Generation tv series as well as most of the movies.  The movie was once again good, not great but good.  The prequel format made for some interesting twists along the way as you are introduced to an array of actors playing  younger versions of the established characters.  I had heard Leonard Nimoy made a cameo.  Hell it was much more than a cameo, he was in many scenes and was sort of a crucial part of the plot.  Did I miss something along the way, since when did Spock ever have a romantic relationship with O’hura?  That was kind of weird.  The plot involved time travel where the future conflicts with the present which can lead to a lot of confusion trying to keep it all straight.  That is once again the case with this film.  The ending was a jumbled mess of improbable, borderline ridiculous events that all work out happily ever after.  Still, it was a good movie overall.  I would say I liked Terminator more though.  I’ll give this one an A-.

After the movie we headed over to the Trek bike store just to look around.  It was interesting to look at the $3000 – $4000 bikes, $400 bike shoes and various other very expensive, hard core cyclist gear.  There were a couple lower cost items there I have my eye on, a softer, more supportive seat as well as a rear rack.  A rear rack is generally frowned upon by road cycling purists.  You normally would see it on a mountain or hybrid style bike.  Oh well, I guess I will just be nontraditional.

I wasn’t sure how late Randall wanted to stay since he had the drive back across the state yet.  It turned out they stayed till almost 9pm.  I grabbed Hungry Howie’s pizza for dinner and we watched some of the Jon & Kate plus 8 marathon.  Wow that is a weird situation.

Shortly before they left Ali was our guinea pig for the EA Active game she bought for me.  She went through an “low intensity” workout.  The game is pretty impressive.  Wii Fit’s biggest plus and minus is it’s simplicity.  It’s pretty basic which makes it easy for exercise novices to follow.  It also can get pretty repetitive after awhile.  There is absolutely no variety in music or scenery in the game.  My Fitness Coach which we bought a few months back had a lot more variety but it had no interactivity with the Wii controllers or Wii Fit board.  It basically was like a glorified exercise DVD, it had no confirmation that you actually were doing what was on screen.  Neither of us have used that game for a long time.

Well EA Active bridges that gap.  Not only does it use an innovative set up that utilizes the Wii controllers to monitor your movements, it also supports the Wii Fit board.  I was impressed by the 20 minute work out Ali went through. There is lots of variety in the music, scenery, activities and exercises.  I’m looking forward to giving it a go myself this week.  It seems to be very cool.

So like I said, Randall and Wendy pulled out around 9.  I thanked them both for coming and specifically Randall for being my movie date.  We had a great time.  I wound up once again staying up way late last night, 11:30 or so thanks to watching the John & Kate season premiere where they address all of the tabloid shit going on.  It seems pretty clear to me they are on the outs.  Kate seems to have a very controlling, entitled and annoying personality. John seems just plain worn out from dealing with her, 8 kids and being a reality tv family for the past 3 years.  The show holds added interest for us since J & K live in our old stomping grounds of Wernersville.

I’m tired today.
