Speed kills, forgetful, wheels, no pain no gain

So last night after work I met up with Ali to do more training runs.  We were trying again the program that we originally intended to do last week, short interval sprints.  I didn’t know much about the program except you run hard for 30 seconds and then jog for 2 minutes to recover and then repeat.

Ali discovered her Garmin has the ability to have a program uploaded to it.  It was pretty cool, it would count down the different segments for you so you knew exactly when to sprint and when to recover.  Like I said I knew the basics of the training drill, what I didn’t know was the amount of sprints we were supposed to do.  When Ali told me 16 sprints I was taken back a bit.  That is a lot of sprints, especially for someone that doesn’t sprint normally.

It was quite warm and humid last evening, I was sweating my ass off in no time.  The way the program is supposed to go, you are supposed to jog during the two minute sections to bring your heart rate down.  Ali was able to hang with that for about half of the work out. Then she switched to walking the first half of the 2 minutes and then jogging the second part of it.

I had absolutely no qualms with walking.  Although my cardio wasn’t nearly as taxed as Ali’s was, my legs were.  My body is simply not used to running hard, then slowing down and then running hard again,  especially 16 cycles of it.  It was a tough work out for me.  Ali did do a great job of hanging with me during the sprints.  She actually can run quite fast, she has long legs that cover a lot of distance when she opens up her stride.

Like anything, I would expect if we continue doing sprint workouts our performance will improve.  I can feel the after effects of the workout in my legs today.

Somehow I managed to forget my lunch box today.  I have a history of forgetting things that I normally take to work that are gym related.  I have forgotten gym socks, a towel and even sneakers at some point.  I have never forgotten my lunch box.  That thing is like an extension of my body at this point, I have no idea how I would have forgotten to grab it.

I bought a set of replacement wheels for my Dawes road bike last night.  I am hoping I can get the bike fixed up and back on the road without the aid of a bike shop.  Seems like a waste to spend anything more than minimal money on the bike since I have visions of replacing it with a Craigslist find sometime in the future.

My neighbor told me she was looking into other ways to keep the dogs quiet.  She mentioned a shock collar as a possibility.  I told her we definitely didn’t want the dogs shocked.  We would much prefer if she just allowed them to participate in the family instead of ostracizing them to the outdoors.

I did a quick search and found out there are spray collars available.  Instead of electrocuting the animal if it barks it shoots a quick blast of citronella scented oil, a smell dogs don’t like.  It is a painless way to correct the animal.  Supposedly once the dog associates wearing the collar with getting sprayed you don’t even need the collar turned on, the dog will know to keep it quiet when it is on them.

She also mentioned planting some bushes along the fence line to block their visibility.  I am skeptical how effective this will be though since the dogs are so tiny the bushes would have to be incredibly dense to keep them from getting under them.

I also found out that my neighbor is now suddenly married. We had no idea this was going on and we have never even met the person she is now married to. As far as we know, she was only seeing the man for a few months.
