Blow back, Bike back, The World

As I mentioned yesterday, Randall was quite happy on Saturday to beat his chest about his volleyball win all over the virtual world of Facebook.  Although I expected some crowing I thought he went a bit crazy with it when you look at the real world circumstances.  I figured the best way to illustrate this was through yet another xtranormal.com episode.

I also was sent a link to a Randall pic that he obviously is quite embarrassed about.  He evidently went berserk when it was posted online.  I think he may now realize a couple things. He may have been a bit overzealous in his celebration of a game where 3 of the 4 participants didn’t really care all that much about the outcome.  Also, when it comes to e-teasing I shouldn’t be challenged. I’ll take my foot off the pedal now.

I picked up Ali’s bike from the bike shop after work.  They just made sure everything was back in alignment and tight, as well as rewrapping the handlebar that got scraped up.  They didn’t charge us a penny for the work which again, I thought was very cool.

Ali isn’t enjoying the healing process from her accident.  She has all kinds of body soreness on top of the pain of the open wounds starting to heal.  Unfortunately her injuries will more than likely prevent her from participating in the triathlon we are both signed up for this weekend.

We have a rather odd Tuesday night ahead.  We are getting picked up at our home in a limo along with three or four other couples from the running club.  We are then getting driven to the east coast to Fort Lauderdale for dinner aboard The World, a luxurious floating condo that circles the globe.  We are being treated to this by one of the very affluent members of our club.  I think it is his way of thanking us for what we have contributed to the running scene.  Needless to say it is a VERY generous offer. It should be an interesting night.

Epic fail, Wipeout

On Friday I left work early to head over to Jeremy’s place.  Unlike when Jeremy visits me where I can assume he will arrive 2 hours later than he tells me, I like to more or less be on time.  I was about 20 minutes later than my predicted 5 pm arrival time due to a coffee stop and having to pull over on the alley to tighten down the bed cover on the truck.

I was greeted by the Rodger’s clan, including Ainsley whom is much bigger than when I saw her last as a newborn. The plan was for Jeremy and I to go over to the beautiful park right down their street with Connor for a bit before we would score pizza for dinner.

I told Jeremy that I wasn’t interested in any physical challenges this time around since we had the volleyball tournament on Saturday.  The last thing I needed was to hurt myself doing something dumb.

Well it didn’t take long for Jeremy to throw out a challenge anyway.  He wanted to see who could touch the basketball rim.  He has bragged that his power lifting routine has helped his vertical leap.  Jeremy went first.  He took a few steps and missed the rim but lied and said he touched it.  He did manage to graze the rim on a subsequent attempt.

I really didn’t want to try it since I was still in my clothes from work and my muscles were stone cold and stiff from the two hour drive across the alley.  Despite my better judgement I emptied my pockets, took a couple steps and easily grabbed the rim. However as I reached up with my right arm I heard a loud crack in my neck which followed with some substantial pain when I landed.  Great, I cranked my neck.

It was ironic that the one thing I wanted to avoid happened within the first few minutes of my visit.  I spent a good portion of the rest of the evening trying to loosen up my neck, it was very stiff.

We hung out at the park for awhile.  They have some nice bar set ups there.  I showed Jeremy my assisted muscle ups on several different bars.  Jeremy tried to do them later and didn’t even get close to pulling one off.

After we got back from the park we went out to get get groceries for the tournament and pizza for dinner.  Jeremy paid for the large pizza which was nice of him.  After the pizza I had a couple of these chocolate cookies that Mandy made.  They were fantastic.

We stayed up a little later than I would have preferred playing some games on my old Xbox which I donated to Jeremy since I couldn’t sell it on Craigslist.  He dominated me  in Marvel vs Capcom.  I took him apart in NFL Blitz.

My sleeping arrangements were in Ainsley’s room.  I got to sleep in the bed she will use in a few years.  I have slept in this bed a few times now so I knew exactly how to make myself fit.  I fell asleep pretty easily, I was tired.

I woke up early Saturday morning but I am not sure how early since my phone was on the other side of the room on the charger.  I just laid there with my eyes closed, thinking I may get lucky and fall back asleep.  I didn’t.

Although I had my traditional weekend breakfast of Pop-Tarts, Jeremy made extra scrambled eggs for me.  His frying pan was overflowing with them.  They weren’t half bad.

We left for the beach about 7:40, a little later than we hoped since check in was supposed to end at 8 am.  Luckily Jeremy lives close to Deerfield Beach, we got there right about 8am.  I laughed when I saw the registration tent was nearly deserted, hardly anybody was even there yet.

We got our junk and shelter set up on the beach.  As we were waiting the gray clouds overhead started to sprinkle. Before long the sprinkle turned into a deluge.  There was a big crowd on the beach participating in some event by the water.  The rain sent most of them scrambling.  Jeremy and I just camped under the tent and watched the humanity scurry from the rain.

Jeremy and I laughed at one group of people.  If you look closely in the center of the picture you will see them.  It was a group of 4 or 5 people that were huddled under a tiny umbrella that barely covered their heads.  Instead of heading for cover they decided it made more sense to stand out in the rain while their bodies were soaked.  They stood like that for around 10-15 minutes.  It was funny.

The rain continued off and on for quite awhile, close to an hour I would estimate, delaying the start of the tournament.

When the rain let up Randall found his way over to our tent.  I hadn’t seen Randall since late January.  He has since reported to me his weight loss which is around 15 pounds.  He looked good, clearly the lightest since I have known him.

Due to the light attendance, Jeremy and I found out they lumped the A and BB level players together, not a great thing for us considering the other three teams in our pool were A teams.  Randall, who signed up to play A, seemed to luck out and have the net with more BB teams on it.

Our net had some of my least favorite combinations on it.  There were the young guys that not only had on matching shorts and hats, they were coordinated colors.  Then we also had a co-ed team playing in the men’s division, something else that normally bugs the shit out of me.

We ref’d the first match and immediately had a feeling we were in trouble.  Both of the teams looked very solid, making very few unforced errors.

Our first match was against the co-ed team.  I felt very rusty early on and Jeremy obviously was as well.  We made a ton of early mistakes, mostly the serving and passing variety which allowed the co-ed team to get a decent lead early.  Later in the game we made a run that got us close.  I finally decided to actually try to serve at the girl which is “How to play a co-ed team in a men’s division” strategy 101.

I also realized before the match that I recognized the male part of the co-ed team, it was Bee Sting.  Bee Sting is a guy Rich and I played during our first ever tournament in Florida back in 2000/2001.  We nick named him that because of a face thing he has going on that sort of looks like he had an allergic reaction to  bee sting.  I had not seen the guy since that day.  I thought it was funny I would run into him a decade later, on a co-ed team no less.

Well anyway we wound up losing a close game to the co-ed team, which both Jeremy and I thought was our best chance of winning on the net.  It was a down way to start the day.

Our next match was against the coordinated outfit kids whom appeared to be the best team on our net.  They were quick, took care of the ball and were smart with their shot placement.  We had a very tight game with them up until the late teens where again we ran into a string of unforced errors where they served Jeremy again and again and we couldn’t side out. It was frustrating.

Despite losing our first two games, we still had a chance to make the playoffs if we won our last game.  Again we were ahead/close for a portion of the game but then had an utter implosion of bad play at the end which resulted in our worst loss of the day. When the last slide occurred I just wanted to get off the court, it wasn’t fun in the least.

Surprisingly, Randall and Tabby were struggling on their net, despite having what appeared to be easier competition.  They lost 3 of their 4 matches, which included losing to a team with a pot bellied 70 year old.  I really wish I would have had a chance to see how that happened.  Their only win came against a couple picnic ballers in their last match.

We had scheduled to play Randall in his grudge match.  It was talked up endlessly during the week by Randall.  It was the last thing I felt like doing after the poor performance we had just put in.  Plus there was a shortage of nets to play on since some guys inserted themselves into the only spare net to play a pick up game.

So after Jeremy and I sat around for about an hour, we decided to quickly jam a game in between the end of pool play and playoffs.  We ran onto the court with no warm up and started playing.  It was another ugly performance that got uglier as time went on.  I had checked out of the match mentally shortly after it began.  I just saw the same things happening again and again.  I was much more interested in the match being over than the end result which was a 21-12 loss.

I congratulated Randall on earning his revenge.  I was very complimentary in defeat, not offering up any excuses for losing although I certainly had a number I could have picked from.  Randall did not gloat much on the beach, he waited until he signed on to Facebook to do most of that.

Jeremy knew I had no interest in sticking around  (see tip 266 ) after the day of frustration and we didn’t waste much time packing up and leaving.  Ironically, Randall’s partner asked me if I wanted to play with him on an upcoming west coast event.

There were many issues throughout the day that gave us problems.  On my side, my timing was all sorts of f’d up from not playing much at all.  My passing and serving, especially early on were not good.  I had a hilariously bad play when I misjudged a sky high, wind blown, ball badly.  I jumped, landed, swung and missed, falling on my ass like a stooge afterward.  At least it was good for some laughs for the spectators.

Plus when I play with Jeremy he wants to play my natural left side so I play the right, which I just don’t like at all.  It eliminates my hard angle shot that used to be my bread and butter as well as making everything else feel like I am doing it in a mirror.

Jeremy seemed like his additional girth/muscle mass from power lifting has stolen a step or two from his game.  I was yelling at him to MOVE often throughout the day.  He hardly had any sand on him, I don’t know if he dove once defensively.  I on the other hand was down on my belly routinely.  He just seemed very slow to react. When I am the guy scrambling on a doubles team it normally isn’t going to go well.

In the big picture I realize that for me to have any expectations about either of our level of play is pretty ludicrous.  I mean if you don’t ever play, how can you expect to keep any sort of edge on your skills?  Of course that didn’t matter to Randall in the least, he got what he wanted,  even if it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

On the drive back to Jeremy’s place we didn’t talk much about the tournament.  There really wasn’t much I wanted to say about it except I was glad it was over.

When we got back I woofed down a left over piece of pizza before I piled in the truck to drive home.  I thanked Jeremy and Mandy for their hospitality.  Despite the poor volleyball performance, it was nice to see them and their kids.

The one good thing about not making the playoffs was I actually got home in time to have dinner with Ali.  I told her that a meal of baked beans, mac n cheese and a fake chicken patty sounded good.  We enjoyed our dinner while watching Tivo.   While we watched Tvio I wheeled my Dawes into the great room.  I wanted to work on swapping out the wheels since the replacements I bought on Ebay arrived Friday.

My plan was to move the tires, tubes and rear wheel gear cassette over to the new wheels, shouldn’t be a big deal.

I started with the rear wheel first since I knew that would take longer.  It didn’t take long will I was on the internet looking for tips.  Removing the gears wasn’t as simple as I hoped.   It looked like normally a special socket is used to removed a Shimano cassette which I did not have. I eventually stumbled across a video that showed my a caveman way to do it.

Once I got the gears off I discovered another problem.  They did not fit the free hub on the new wheel.  Evidently the cheap wheels on the Dawes utilized a hub that is not widely used.  I raised the white flag and stated I would have to resort to letting the bike shop help me out.

The best part of the volleyball tournament was that I emerged pretty unscathed physically other than a sore neck from rim touching.  As a result Ali and I were able to still plan to hit the water park on Sunday.  I didn’t want to push it with running but we agreed to do a bike/swim thing.

I had to get very creative with my truck loading skills as we had a total of 4 bikes along.  My Trek, Ali’s new bike, Ali’s old bike to drop off with Christy and my disassembled Dawes jammed into the cab of the truck.  Not only did I have to make it all fit but also position and secure the bikes in a way that they would not damage each other.

At first Ali wasn’t real keen on taking her tri bike out on a main road but I assured her that all she had to do was stay on her regular bars at first, it shouldn’t be any more difficult than riding her old bike this way.

Ali took a few laps around the water park parking lot to make sure she could clip in and out of her new pedals cleanly.  After Ali felt ok with that we headed out.  It was overcast and windy on the northern portion of our ride.  I was working hard to maintain 17 mph.  I assumed Ali would have been way back as I didn’t bother looking back very often.  To my surprise, every time I sneaked a peek she was still close.  Evidently she was utilizing the tri bars and found the position made a big difference.

Once we turned around and had the wind to our backs Ali said she was fine with me pushing the pace as much as I wanted to.  I kept my speed up over 20 and again Ali was able to keep pace.

We were maybe a mile or so from the intersection at Immokalee Road when it happened.  I was still ahead keeping a solid pace when I heard “Oh NO!” behind me.  The words kind of go through me as I listen back to them in my mind.  Those words were immediately followed by the sound of Ali hitting the road, hard.  I stop on a dime and look back, Ali is in the middle of the right car lane, sobbing,  trying to drag herself and her bike off to the side.  I go running back towards her and tell her to wait so I can help her.

As I approached I can see Ali is a mess, she had bad road rash on her hand, her elbow and both knees, she also had a rip in her bike shirt. She got to the bike lane and just laid down as I got her bike out of the way.  Quickly surveying her I didn’t think there was anything majorly wrong with her like broken bones.

A number of people stopped as Ali was sitting/laying there, I am sure it looked quite bad.  Ali was upset and crying not only from the physical pain of her abrasions and bruising, but also from the idea of crashing her several day old bike.  She also was freaking out because if a car with an asleep at the wheel driver would have happened to be beside her when it happened she could have literally been roadkill.

When she calmed down a bit I asked her what happened.  Evidently she was down on the tri bars and she tried to wipe her nose, which was running, without first coming up onto the regular bars.  That tiny little motion threw her off balance enough to start a swerve that quickly grew uncontrollable, resulting in the crash.  She literally was all over the right vehicular lane.

I checked out her bike and other than some ripped up handle bar wrap and corner of an elbow pad I didn’t see any other issues.  Ali originally asked if I just wanted to go get the truck and pick her up.  I told her if she rode back it would be quicker than if I rode back and drove back.

She hopped on her bike and rode ahead of me slowly for a little bit before she pulled over in a turning lane and stopped, sobbing.  She said she was just freaked out and asked if I could just go get the truck.  I understood and pedaled back to the water park as fast as I could. When I got back to her she was walking her bike along the sidewalk.  It was odd that two weeks in a row our rides concluded with someone getting picked up in the truck.

Of course the crash scuddled any further exercise plans.  I told Ali we would get her home asap and get her cleaned up.  She was upset the entire way home, freaked that she could have been killed and angry that something so simple as wiping your nose could result in such an outcome.

Ali hopped in the shower and endured the very painful process of cleaning brush burns.  After the shower I had to administer additional pain by pouring hydrogen peroxide over the raw skin.  I felt bad as Ali winced in pain.  I helped apply the many bandages required to cover up all of the abrasions.

After we were done I told Ali to just chill out.  She took a nap, the trauma from the crash had wiped her out .

I decided to work on installing the hitch I bought for the Camry.  I bought it on Ebay earlier in the week.  The hitch was supposed to require no drilling to install.  The time estimate to complete the install was 45 minutes on the instructions. It didn’t take me 45 minutes.

Although the install did not require drilling, it did require more prep work than I anticipated like dropping the exhaust system and removing a fascia from the driver side of the car.  It was hot and dirty work as I laid under the car in the warm and humid air.  Working on the side with the muffler/exhaust was particularly annoying.

The hitch itself was well made and bolted to pre-existing mount points on the unibody.  In total 8 bolts are supplied to hold it in place.  I however only used 7.  There was one hole around the exhaust that seemed damaged/stripped.  I tried for 20 minutes to get the bolt to bite on the threads unsuccessfully before I called it as good enough.

I also had to trim a hunk of the fascia in order to get it reinstalled with the new hitch in place.  Yes, the directions said I would have to do that.

The hitch felt rock solid when I was done.  It was a sweaty two and half hours of work but I was pleased with the end result.  I am looking forward to the hitch mount bike rack showing up later this week.

Later in the afternoon Ali said she was feeling ok enough for us to head to the bike shop.  We decided to bring her bike along as well so they could make sure it was ok after hitting the road hard.  We also arranged for Christy to meet us there so she could pick up Ali’s old road bike so I only had 3 bikes in the truck instead of 4 this time.

I carried the Dawes frame into the repair area while Ali carried the spare parts.   We talked to a very nice guy named Eric.  I explained to him how the spokes on my old wheels broke so I bought a new set but the old cassette was not compatible with the new wheels.  I told him I was hoping they could put a compatible cassette on the new wheels and put everything back together.

The reason I avoided just going to the bike shop originally for this was cost.  After all the Dawes is my back up bike, I certainly didn’t want/need to spend a lot of money on it.  I was pleasantly surprised when the cost of the work which included a new cassette, two new tubes (needed longer stems because wheel is deeper) with labor was only $81 and he did it all on the spot.  I left there quite pleased.

They also took a look at Ali’s bike.  They said that something sounded/felt loose so they wanted to take a better look at it.  We left her bike there.  I will wind up picking it up today or tomorrow.

When we got home Ali said she didn’t feel like cooking, understandably.  I called in a pick up order from the near by italian restaurant for a couple of subs.  We enjoyed them while watching Knight and Day, the action flick with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.  The film was mostly entertaining as long as you took the mindset that nothing that takes place is remotely believable,  decent rental for sure.  I’d give it a solid B.

I also jumped in our pool for the first time in 2011 to do some swimming.  I wanted to see how many back and forth laps in the pool would roughly equal 400 meters.  I did this based on time, figuring somewhere around 9 minutes would be about right with all of the turning.  It worked out to be 24 up and back laps.  Sure it is less than ideal to work on your swimming endurance in a smaller pool but it’s better than nothing.  I think we will be buying one of those pool tethers that allow you to swim in place.

I have a sprint tri next weekend after all.

Delivered, destiny awaits

Ali called me late in the day yesterday telling me her bike was ready to be picked up.  She was at the bike shop earlier getting her new bike fitted.  I swung by there after work to pick it up.  I had a bit of an awkward moment as I was loading the bike up in the truck.

Some guy had pulled up in the spot next to me and was unloading his bike.  He saw the pink seat that was on Ali’s bike and made a joke about it.  I gave a fake laugh and said something like “pink isn’t my thing”.  I think the guy sensed I didn’t think his comment was very funny.  He then asks me if I need any extra CO2 cartridges, for some reason he had spares. (things used to inflate tires in a repair situation)  I INSTANTLY replied back “No thanks, I’m good”

It was awkward because I just blurted out NO almost like he was a guy at the fair handing out religious information or a woman in the Bahamas asking to braid my hair.  In reality I certainly could have used the cartridges, you never can have too many.

I am pretty sure the guy walked into the store with his bike thinking “What a weirdo…”

Ali took her bike out for a brief spin last night.  She returned very happy, saying the bike felt great which I was glad to hear.  She said she is actually excited to get out on the bike more.

I bought a bolt on hitch and bike rack for the Camry this week.  After having the strap on our old carrier snap I no longer trust that type of carrier to carry bikes, especially expensive, carbon fiber varieties.  The hitch is a no drill, bolt on, 1.25″ receiver model.  It should work out great.

I am leaving work a little early today to start the drive across Alligator Alley to Jeremy’s place.  I am staying there tonight so I am fresh for our volleyball tournament tomorrow.  Randall has been on an epic trash talking rampage.  Obviously the sting of being schooled last summer is still there, even after all this time.  He could lose every game in the tournament and still be pleased if he manages to beat Jeremy and I. My primary goal is to emerge from the tournament uninjured.

I have already pledged this is going to be an “old school” type of vball experience for me.  I plan on pulling out a number of the tips from my classic volleyball pointer list .  Hopefully Randall has done his homework.  I am fearful of what would happen if Randall would actually lose to us again.  He might lose another 50 lbs and get breast implants by this time next year.

Should be fun regardless.

Bought, booked, incongruent

So yesterday I gave Ali the green light to go in and buy her bike.  I charged with trying to negotiate the price down as much as possible.  Although the bike shop owner didn’t move down from the discounted price he offered Ali last week he did give us credit for what we already paid for the rental, Ali’s bike fitting and is throwing in a set of SPD pedals as well.

Of course Ali is very excited.  I would expect the purchase should get Ali more excited about biking.  It better.

Yesterday I booked my flight to PA to play in the Pottstown Rumble.  I booked the flight on Southwest, despite their little problem with holes in the roof of their planes.  I’ve never flown Southwest before.  Mom and Ali have and both have had positive things to say about them.  I think I will be crashing at Todd’s place while I am up there.

The last time I played in the Rumble was 2008 with Randall where we had a disappointing showing in BB.  This time I am playing with Charlie whom I have played with twice at the Rumble.  Charlie has not been playing any volleyball at all for a few years so he is working hard to get back into fighting shape.  It should be a fun time.  I just hope for decent weather.

So now that the short term budget crisis has been averted, Obama has been setting his sights on the long term issues and how to break this insane cycle of debt.  He took a bold step and actually brought back up his original campaign promise to kill the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

“Raising taxes” is on a hair trigger with republicans.  They were all over Obama mentioning the subject like flies on shit.

Ok let’s take a look at a chart that illustrates what is behind the insane deficit spending.

You can see the various things that have snowballed into the financial hell we are in now.  Ok now look closely and you will see the largest hunk of this is because of the tax breaks Bush imposed for the rich being extended.

You will hear Republicans crying that more taxes on the rich will cripple the economy.  In my opinion this is pure unadulterated bullshit.

Let’s get real for a few minutes. The current tax rate on wealthy Americans is the lowest in history.  The tax rate on the wealthy in America is the lowest of all industrialized nations in the world. During this economic downturn where middle class Americans have gotten punched in the mouth, the rich actually have GROWN their pot of gold, increasing the disparity of wealth in our country to historic levels.

What Obama pledged during his campaign and what he is reviving again is simply rolling back the rate on wealthy Americans ($250k plus) to what they were during the Clinton years which if you recall, were very prosperous.  When you compare the Clinton taxation level to the level of the Republican godfather, Ronald Reagan, there is no comparison.  The tax rate on the rich was much higher in the 80’s. During the Clinton years the federal government actually had a budget SURPLUS (which Bush demolished immediately).

The republicans are playing a shell game where they try to direct your attention to higher taxes(for a few) but while you are ranting about that , they will turn their attention to  gutting domestic programs that help people of need in all sorts of areas. They are all about cutting the deficit as long as it doesn’t mean they have to sell one of their Mercedes to do it.

If you look closely for example at what the Republicans are proposing for Medicare you should be disgusted.  They want to turn it into a voucher system which would do two things, dramatically raise the out of pocket expenses for seniors who in most cases are already existing on a very limited income and inject even more cash into the pockets of insurance companies as this would get them into a segment of the population that they were generally excluded from.  It’s downright criminal.

Equally criminal is the general populace not thinking for themselves, instead allowing their opinions to be swayed by one liners and buzzwords.  These people that can’t be bothered to look at the big picture are unknowingly being herded like cattle to the slaughter.

I see this first hand with Florida state pension holders complaining about the policies Rick Scott is trying to jam through, even though they were ignorant enough to vote for him without really investigating what he was all about.

Ignorance has a price, stop being herded.

Hopping dips, Early morning burial, Set stage

Yesterday after work I headed outside to film my 2nd attempt at this month’s Bar-barian challenge.  My earlier attempt was disqualified because I didn’t have consistent extension at the top of the movement.  Just like the first attempt, I had issues getting back on top of the bar which frustrates the hell out of me.  It totally has to do with me not being able to get my long legs to work for me instead of against me.  I went slower this time to make sure my ROM was solid but it resulted in fewer reps, 20.  It’s a decent number but I hope to up that by at least 4 or 5 before the month is up.

Later on I headed back out to do some work on the parallel bars.  I decided I would try some hopping dips.  A hopping dip is when you push up hard off the bars so you can hop your hands forward.  I went back and forth the length of the bars several times, it didn’t take long at all to totally fatigue my triceps.  I also did reps where I pressed up on to the 4×4’s and then caught myself as I hopped down to the bars which are 9-10 inches below.  That is REALLY tough.  Stopping gravity with just your triceps is hard work.  This type of explosive movement is a great way to shock my arms, just as long as my elbows and shoulders don’t blow apart in the process.

So this morning I let the dogs outside as I always do after rolling out of bed.  As usual when I opened the door Sadie went running off, hoping to scare up some movement.  Nicki was dilly dallying inside so I walked back in to get her to hurry up.

So I let Nicki out and Sadie comes prancing back towards the door.  I see the outline of something large in her mouth as she approaches.  As she came into the light I was horrified when I saw what it was, a dead rabbit.

Sadie proudly dropped the rabbit at my feet.  I looked closely at the animal, at first hoping against hope that Sadie grabbed it, scared the hell out of it, but didn’t kill it.  It didn’t take long to ascertain that she snapped it’s neck, probably from shaking the hell out of it once she pinned the rabbit down.

Sadie was confused when I yelled at her for what she thought was a good thing, she FINALLY caught the rabbit.  For years Nicki and now Sadie have chased rabbits around our yard.  The rabbits however have always had the upper hand, being able to either scoot out under one of the gates or find refuge under the sheds or outdoor deck.  Their luck finally ran out.

I took the dogs inside and continued to scold Sadie.  Nicki sensed my anger and scurried back to the bedroom as well even though she was an innocent bystander.  I then went outside at 5:45 am to bury the rabbit.  You can imagine how I felt as I dug the grave via flashlight for the poor rabbit.  Remember I am the guy that captures wolf spiders and sets them free. It was a pretty awful way to start my day.

I am playing my first volleyball tournament of 2011 this weekend with Jeremy.  The last time I played was last summer, also with Jeremy.  It was in that tournament that we handed Randall an embarrassing, lopsided loss in the playoffs, complete with a presigned sympathy card.

Since that tournament I haven’t touched a volleyball, except maybe to pick one off the floor of the garage when it rolled off a shelf.  My focus has been on bodyweight and triathlon training.

Randall on the other hand has been working diligently since that epic loss.  He made a serious commitment to fitness and weight loss.  He has lost somewhere between 30-40 pounds depending on how high of a starting weight he is willing to fess up to.

Randall also has been playing A LOT of volleyball, participating in a league and playing more tournaments in a couple months than I have in a couple years.  He has had good success, winning a tournament (where they combined BB/B) and doing decent in the next level up in a later tournament.

In this weekend’s tournament Jeremy and I will be playing BB so we won’t have a chance to play “officially” but a grudge match will surely take place at some point. Randall has been trying to administer his customary pre-match smack talk.  I however am only mildly retaliating. You see all of the pressure is entirely on his shoulders.

Jeremy has also had a moratorium on any volleyball play since last year.  Any volleyball pundit would say based on Randall’s improved fitness level, dramatically more regular play combined with our complete void of play, they should wipe the court with us.  Just imagine if they lose again.  I will have to bring a shovel with for Randall to bury his head with.

Speed kills, forgetful, wheels, no pain no gain

So last night after work I met up with Ali to do more training runs.  We were trying again the program that we originally intended to do last week, short interval sprints.  I didn’t know much about the program except you run hard for 30 seconds and then jog for 2 minutes to recover and then repeat.

Ali discovered her Garmin has the ability to have a program uploaded to it.  It was pretty cool, it would count down the different segments for you so you knew exactly when to sprint and when to recover.  Like I said I knew the basics of the training drill, what I didn’t know was the amount of sprints we were supposed to do.  When Ali told me 16 sprints I was taken back a bit.  That is a lot of sprints, especially for someone that doesn’t sprint normally.

It was quite warm and humid last evening, I was sweating my ass off in no time.  The way the program is supposed to go, you are supposed to jog during the two minute sections to bring your heart rate down.  Ali was able to hang with that for about half of the work out. Then she switched to walking the first half of the 2 minutes and then jogging the second part of it.

I had absolutely no qualms with walking.  Although my cardio wasn’t nearly as taxed as Ali’s was, my legs were.  My body is simply not used to running hard, then slowing down and then running hard again,  especially 16 cycles of it.  It was a tough work out for me.  Ali did do a great job of hanging with me during the sprints.  She actually can run quite fast, she has long legs that cover a lot of distance when she opens up her stride.

Like anything, I would expect if we continue doing sprint workouts our performance will improve.  I can feel the after effects of the workout in my legs today.

Somehow I managed to forget my lunch box today.  I have a history of forgetting things that I normally take to work that are gym related.  I have forgotten gym socks, a towel and even sneakers at some point.  I have never forgotten my lunch box.  That thing is like an extension of my body at this point, I have no idea how I would have forgotten to grab it.

I bought a set of replacement wheels for my Dawes road bike last night.  I am hoping I can get the bike fixed up and back on the road without the aid of a bike shop.  Seems like a waste to spend anything more than minimal money on the bike since I have visions of replacing it with a Craigslist find sometime in the future.

My neighbor told me she was looking into other ways to keep the dogs quiet.  She mentioned a shock collar as a possibility.  I told her we definitely didn’t want the dogs shocked.  We would much prefer if she just allowed them to participate in the family instead of ostracizing them to the outdoors.

I did a quick search and found out there are spray collars available.  Instead of electrocuting the animal if it barks it shoots a quick blast of citronella scented oil, a smell dogs don’t like.  It is a painless way to correct the animal.  Supposedly once the dog associates wearing the collar with getting sprayed you don’t even need the collar turned on, the dog will know to keep it quiet when it is on them.

She also mentioned planting some bushes along the fence line to block their visibility.  I am skeptical how effective this will be though since the dogs are so tiny the bushes would have to be incredibly dense to keep them from getting under them.

I also found out that my neighbor is now suddenly married. We had no idea this was going on and we have never even met the person she is now married to. As far as we know, she was only seeing the man for a few months.

De-spoked, try then buy, still barking, race ragged

I had three stops on my way home from work on Friday.  First stop was at Sports Authority where I bought 30 additional pounds of plate weight using the $15 same as cash card I received in the mail.  The thought is this would allow me to potentially post a 345 pound dead lift at some point.

After that it was off to Sam’s Club to buy our bi-weekly bulk items and then finally to Wal-Mart.  The dead battery in the Tacoma was bought there a year ago.  I hadn’t realized that I bought the top of the line battery they sell, the Maxx, which has a three year free replacement policy.  It was a pleasant surprise to get a replacement battery for free.

While I was waiting for them to process the exchange I instantly spotted a PERFECT candidate for peopleofwalmart.com   I just wasn’t quite sure how to get her picture without her noticing. She was a very heavy black female.  She had an absolutely awful wig on that looked like a corn row version of a bee hive.  She accented her look wit a small gem in her nose, elegantly painted toe nails with a ring on almost every toe.  She definitely would have made the cut and been on the site.

I started off my Saturday very early.  I got up and went to the 6 AM club run by the beach.  Ali didn’t go since she was running the 10K on Sunday.  We had planned it out the night before that once I got back we would pack up our bikes and go ride/swim at the water park, reversing the days because of the race.  Ali said I should call her on the way back from the run.

I did a 7 mile run that went well, averaging a 9:15 pace.  I ran with someone I never met before, it just happened to turn out he is the same age as me.  He was the talkative type which works out very well for me since I usually need to be jump started into conversation.  Even with starting that early I sweated my ass off.  My t-shirt was totally soaked at the end.

So after I got in the truck I called home to let Ali know I was leaving and also to ask if she wanted me to get her ice tea from DD.  No answer.  Hmmm ok maybe she is out with the dogs or in the bathroom.  I try multiple times to call both the home number and Ali’s cell number during the drive home, no answer.  Now I was getting annoyed.  I knew that the likely cause was Ali was in the bedroom still asleep.  We have the phone ringer turned off in the bedroom and her cell phone, which is always by her side, always has the sound turned off for some weird reason.

So I walk in the house about 8:15 and see the bedroom door is closed.  Yep, she is asleep.  It was impossible for me to hide my frustration when I opened the door and told her to get up, we were supposed to be leaving in 15 minutes or so.  Ali tried to redirect the heat, saying that I didn’t turn on the house alarm and the back slider was unlocked.

I told her I find it very annoying that we talked about what we were going to do the night before and she decided to not set an alarm to make sure she was awake.  I said if she had made plans to run with her girlfriends she would make sure she was up but for some reason I don’t get that same courtesy.  It wasn’t a great way to start the day, Ali being annoyed that I was annoyed with her.

I have a very simple rule, if you tell me you are going to do something, do it. Under promise and over deliver works really well in all aspects of life.

So we hurriedly got ready to leave.  The reason behind my haste is the crowds at the water park.  We need to get our bike ride done by around the time the park opens so we have easy access to the swimming lanes. It also allows us to eat lunch before the lines get to epic length.  Makes sense to me.

I decided to take my good old Dawes road bike for this ride.  My Trek road bike while being free, lighter, possessing a much better shifter system and being all around “cooler” has one wart, it’s too small for me. My Dawes has a bigger frame and I wanted to see how it felt on a ride in comparison to the Trek.

It didn’t take long for me to feel the difference.  Despite the clunky shifting, 5 pounds of extra weight and me too looks the bike actually felt more comfortable because of it’s additional size.  My riding position felt more natural.

Ali did a nice job of keeping up with me during the ride, on the return trip I even let her lead for about a mile and a half so she could get some non-drafting experience.  She managed to keep her speed at 17-18 mph.

I then pulled back ahead to lead the rest of the way back.  Then it happened.  All of a sudden the back end of my bike started swerving like mad.  I quickly glanced down and thought I blew out a tire.  I slowed down rapidly and managed to unclip one foot so i didn’t fall into the road.  Luckily Ali was able to react quickly and not crash into the back of me which would have been a double disaster.

I laid the bike down and tried to figure out what exactly happened.  As I looked at the rear wheel I saw several spokes hanging.  Evidently at least one spoke broke and caused a chain reaction where about a half dozen more snapped.  When the spokes left loose it changed the geometry of the wheel and actually allowed it to get pressed hard against the frame of the bike.  The wheel was pretty much locked in place.

Not ever having this happen before I came up with a plan of action.  I used our bike tools to remove the hanging spoke segments, thinking that I may possibly be able to ride the bike back slowly.  Well removing the broken spokes did nothing to straighten the wheel, something I should have realized right away.  So I told Ali to ride back to the park, get the truck and come pick me up.  I told her I would start walking that direction with bike in hand.

With the rear wheel locked up I literally had to carry the bike the entire way.  With my bike shoes on the only manageable option was to walk on the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road.  There were a number of bikers that came up on me as I lugged my broken mount forward.  Without fail every single group asked if I needed help.  As soon as I told them my spokes broke they knew I was f’d.  I thanked them for stopping and that help was on the way.

I was happy to see Ali pull up with the truck maybe 20 minute later.  Walking while carrying a bike is not exactly fun.

We headed back to the park and were greeted by a HUGE line to get in even though it was only slightly after 10 am.  Once again our family pass card saved the day.  We flashed it and were able to instantly skip a line that had at least 60-70 people in it, pretty damn sweet.

So the swim was the last leg of my 3 sport brick for the day.  I pushed my total swim to 1600 meters, averaging 8:15 to 8:30 for 400 meter segments.  I was quite pooped by the end of it. We didn’t waste any time grabbing lunch since I had a bunch of stuff to still get done at home plus we had another stop on the way back.   Ali had asked if we could stop at the bike shop so I could see the bike she was interested in.

The shop was pretty busy at the time.  Ali took me over to the rack and showed me the potential purchase.  It looked like a nice bike.  We talked to one of the employees there.  I told him my concerns that with Ali being a novice bike rider, I feared she could have issues riding in the forward position on the tri bars where stability is more difficult.

He suggested that maybe we should rent a tri bike so she can test it out.  Hey, that is a great idea.  A try before you buy strategy makes solid sense here.  So while they got the rental bike ready we walked around.

Ali pointed to one of the bikes on the rack and said something like “Wow, this one has two gears down low.  I wonder what the point of that is?”  What she was referring to were the two small gears on a derailleur, something all bikes that can be shifted possess.  I could not help but make a joke about Ali’s comment.  It struck me as ironically funny that Ali has filled her head with all of this detail about the tiny difference in angles and bike geometry but she had no idea what a derailleur looks like.

Well Ali didn’t like my joking about her bike ignorance and started to get angry.  I guess in retrospect I understand her anger but at the time I growled back that we were at the bike store to appease her and her giving me shit about a joke was not good as I walked away.

So we got the bike home and Ali soon get geared up and took it out for a spin.  At first we had her just do laps around the neighbors circular driveway to make sure she got the hang of where everything was.  When she felt ok she headed up our street to the end and back, about a 4 mile round trip.  She returned saying she felt good on the bike except for the seat, it was very uncomfortable and borderline painful.

I took the Bontrager seat off Ali’s Dawes and put it on the tri bike.  She went out for another 4 mile loop and said it felt MUCH better.  Later on that evening I went out with her to the end of the road and back to see how she was doing.  She did a nice job of keeping her speed up although she was doing a lot of veering when she was down on the tri bars.  I would expect this to get better with experience.

I at least felt somewhat better about Ali  being able to use a tri bike with more practice.  She reported that the riding position felt very comfortable.  The next step I charged her with is seeing if the bike shop owners that she is friendly with are willing to “help” us a little more on the price.  Seeing the price tags on some of the bikes in there makes me think they can afford to move a little  bit more.

Saturday night was consumed mostly by race prep.  This was going to be a large race with a lot of moving parts.

We arrived on site Sunday morning at around 5:30 am and the fun started right away.  It seemed like there was a lot of confusion right off the bat.  Once everything was set up the confusion didn’t end.  This race was one of those where there are walkers and runners. The walkers aren’t timed.  Even so some of them got timing chips that were assigned to runners which lead to problems of course.  We had a myriad of issues coming in at the registration tables although with a larger race, you expect to see more issues.

Despite being asked to fix problems pretty much non-stop we managed to keep a pleasant demeanor through out.  After all, in most situations if a runner comes up with a problem it normally isn’t because they screwed up, somebody else did.

I had to scramble to the start line to get things going.  I had the megaphone in hand, expecting to hand it off to either the race director or the club president who starts a lot of the events. Well the club president was busy trying to video the start and the race director was kind of short circuiting due to sleep deprivation because he was up all night setting up the course.  He was kind of freaking out that we HAD to start the race but we were only 20 seconds past the official 7:30 start time.

I was surprised he didn’t want to say a few words, you know, thanks for coming, great turn out, have fun.  He just wanted to say “go” basically.  I told him he was getting delirious so I did something I never did before, I started the race. I held up the megaphone and said very simply “Ok we are getting ready to start the race……. on your mark, get set, GO!” unleashing the mob of humanity down the street.  It was bizarre how that came to be.

Timing the race went relatively well but once results started getting posted more human error was showing it’s self.  I had men that were in the system as women, people with incorrect bib numbers and even a never before seen problem where the system assigned the same bib number to two different runners.  Unfortunately one of them finished in 4th place overall.  There was a mad scramble by me to fix that right before the award ceremony started.

As I mentioned Ali ran the 10K.  She had said before the race her goal was to complete the distance in under an hour, something she never did before.  I was excited for her as she crossed the line in 59 minutes and change setting a new PR for that distance.  The conditions for the run were not easy with bright sun and high humidity.

Despite the multiple issues I had, the good news is the participants themselves seemed to all love the event which is all that matters in the big picture.

It took a long time until we got off the race site. By the time we got home it was close to 11.  I was tied up doing post race stuff until mid-afternoon, it was annoying.  Much of the time was spent trying to troubleshoot some issues I was having exporting data for use by 3rd parties.

It looks like my sonic, bark inhibiting bird house is a fail.  The chihuahuas seem to be barking about as much as ever.  I went down to the fence where the birdhouse is hanging to do some testing.  The little runts were squawking away as they normally do but the unit was not firing off any bark disrupting noise.  So I stood to the side of it and said “woof”.  Bang, the red led flashes and the birdhouse sends out the sound.  I could tell the dogs heard it as they stopped barking and had a confused look.

When they started barking again I would WOOF into the house again to send another shot of silent noise.  My theory is the designers of the sonic birdhouse did not tune it to detect the high pitched squeal of a miniature chihuahua.  After all, most normal people would not keep this type of dog outside.  So for now I guess I can try to manually fire off the box when the dogs are going nuts but of course this does nothing to make me feel better about the situation.

The 3 dogs were left outside the ENTIRE weekend.  Late on Sunday I was out in the side yard doing something and my neighbor was actually outside, you don’t see her outside much.  On cue the dogs started barking at me and she actually came around to the side and called out the nosiest one’s name.  I guess that is her effort at training it.

I saw this as a rare opportunity and I yelled across the fence that it looks like the bark stopper isn’t working at all. The dogs are still barking.  She says in a surprised tone, “The dogs are STILL barking?’  This instantly angered the piss out of me.  Unless my neighbor is partially deaf she knows damn well that the dogs are still barking.  She also obviously dismissed her promises to “work” on the problem and even possibly put up a visible barrier on the fence to address the problem.  She has done nothing and if anything leaves the dogs outside more than ever.

I shot back at her in a tone that had absolutely zero shards of friendliness in it “YES they are still barking. They bark ALL the time whenever anyone is outside, ALL the time..”  I turned around and walked inside without saying anything else.  There should be no doubt left in her mind just how much the situation is bothering me after that exchange.

Nailed it, dead, dumb

I finished season 1 of Dexter on Netflix last night.  I was pumped that I sniffed out that the Ice Truck Killer was actually Dexter’s biological brother a few episodes back.  Unfortunately only 1 more season is available for streaming on Netflix since Showtime/CBS are being pricks. The more I watch the show the more I can identify with Dexter.  No I am not a closeted serial killer but I do spend the majority of my life inside my own head.

I had an unpleasant surprise this morning, the battery in my Tacoma was dead.  Batteries die often in the Florida climate but I had just replaced the battery around a year ago.  At least I should get some credit towards a new one.  As a result I am rolling in the party van today, watch out ladies.

There is a lot of ignorant politics going on right now.  Close to home, the Florida legislature is close to passing amendments that will affect the state pension system.  The most glaring proposed change is a scaled contribution for state workers to the pension system.  This change could equate from anywhere to a 2-5% pay decrease for employees that in some cases have already gone with out a raise for 5 years.

The whole cry to attack the pension system was based on the idea that the pension system is financial black hole.  Forget the fact that this is actually untrue as the Florida pension system is either the 3rd or 4th best funded pension in the country.  The more outrageous thing is the extra money they want to skim from state employees is not targetted to make the pension more robust.  It’s to do things like give tax breaks to Rick Scott’s inner circle of corporate campaign contributors. I can’t tell you how aggravated I am about the insanity of it all.

The other three ring circus is the looming federal government shutdown.  John Boner is trying to hold the president hostage, threatening to not pass a budget if Obama doesn’t agree to a multitude of cuts that are being attached to the budget at the last second.  Of course almost all of these cuts target the middle class and poor and leave the rich unscathed.  Hey if you don’t agree to this shit the government will technically (not literally) be shut down, look how bad that will make you look since you are the man in charge.

Since the last election cycle Obama has made a very deliberate effort to appease the republicans, compromising all over the place in the name of bipartisan cooperation since the election results would indicate that was what the public more or less wanted. In my opinion he has actually gone too far with his cooperation and is on the verge of being perceived as the Republicans bitch. I’d like to see him say the buck stops here, f u Boner.

Enough with kissing the Republicans ass, allowing them to cut out programs that help the average man while injecting provisions about abortion and gay marriage into BUDGET issues.  It is just ridiculous.

If you want to get really angry take a look at a few moveon.org articles like this, this and this.

Vintage volleyball

Most people nowadays that might stumble across my old volleyball videos would do so on YouTube.  Unfortunately YouTube has gutted the music from most of them due to their copyright infringement bullshit.  Yea, I am making a fortune by having music in a video, right..

Anyway, most people don’t know about the little corner of my website dedicated to volleyball, the sport that was THE major hobby for me for a period of a decade or more.  The site has a ton of stuff on it, including the untouched versions of the butchered YouTube videos in .wmv format.

I still update the site when I actually play volleyball which has spun down to a two or three time event per year at this point.

Anyway, here are some links to some of my old videos.  They were made possible by the tireless camera work of Ali who was a dedicated spectator of all of my tournaments back then.  I don’t think she has gone to a tournament of mine in quite a few years, hence the videos have dried up.

LL Homey J

I have a friend and his name is LL Homey J.  Homey has a problem, he is addicted to gadgets.

In my line of work I probably run into more gadget addicts than anything else.  Hell I am a gadget addict myself.  I have the Tivo’s, the Roombas, the fully wired house with home network, Sony Dash, 6 computers, Iphones, Ipad, etc. etc.

Homey however is a notch above me.  He currently has FOUR Ipad’s.  Over the past 5 years I would estimate he has had at LEAST 12 different models of cell phone.  He swaps out his Apple computers every 12-24 months.

Well he elevated himself to a new level when he told me despite having his 4 Ipad’s and Iphone 4 he decided to buy the Motorola Xoom, an Ipad competitor.  His logic was he wanted a 3g enabled tablet which none of his Ipad’s are.

Well it turns out he hates the Xoom, it was a waste of $599.  Luckily he has 14 days to return it, so he can buy something else….

It’s a sickness.
