Last night after the running club board meeting I resumed the tradition of visiting South Street afterward, I missed it last month. Unfortunately we had a light crowd last night, it was just myself, Mitch, the club president and Jake.
Over the Shock Top beers and a couple of slices of pizza Jake and I got an unexpected history lesson about the evolution of the Naples area from Mitch who has lived here since the mid-70’s. He described in detail the stark differences in the greater Naples area then versus now.
Naples three decades ago was a far cry from the elitist, highly affluent area it is perceived as today. Instead Naples used to be filled with “beach bums” whom rarely wore shirts or shoes. This area also used to be a very active landing spot for various drug import/smuggling activity.
Mitch is such a good story teller, listening to him describe life in Naples in the 70’s and 80’s was pretty fascinating. His gift of gab is something I wish I possessed.
Tonight I am picking up mom after work for a Trader Joe’s run. I need a few things as does she. It will make for an unconventional Thursday evening.
