Turning up the geek
Last night I was over at the neighbors house working on getting a new wireless router they bought set up. I noticed they had a Vonage box. Vonage is a voice over IP service that allows you to use your broadband internet connection for phones as well. I actually looked seriously into this a year or so ago but at that time they weren’t able to port over existing phone numbers in our area.
I asked my neighbor about it. He was able to port his number and he said it has been great. So it got my wheels turning. Right now we pay over 50 dollars a month for a shitty local telephone line with call waiting. It’s a ripoff. I could get a Vonage set up going for 15 dollars a month that would give me 500 minutes of talk time, local or long distance! Damn saving 35 a month sounded good to me so I signed up.
One of the downside of voice over IP is if your internet or power is out you have no phones. However Vonage gets around this by automatically routing calls to your home number to your cell phone if this occurs, pretty slick. It has a ton of nice features that far exceed what you get from your local telephone company. One I thought was particularly cool was the ability to have voice mails emailed to you as audio attachments.
It really is some slick shit. If you have broadband internet you really should check it out. www.vonage.com If you actually think it is cool and sign up, do me a favor and use this link https://subscribe.vonage.com/vonage-subscribe/index.htm?refer_id=ESEG3KT168SKUALN57GE It will give me a spiff.
