Not holding my breath
Supposedly the pool cage guy is supposed to show up this morning to do whatever needs to be done to the cage to make it pass inspection for the current code. The guy has been as reliable as George Bush’s grammar skills so I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t show up.
I forgot to mention that on the way back from PA I threw out the idea to Ali about me getting a motorcycle for my daily commute instead of driving the truck. Most days I have no need to take the truck. Driving a bike would could easily save me a couple hundred bucks a month. I had 2 motorcycles growing up.
My first transportation was a Yamaha Enduro 125 cc bike. It barely would do 45 mph wide open but it got me around. Later I picked up a Honda 360 CBT. It was still a small bike but at least it could keep up with cars on the highway. My mom HATED me driving a motorcycle and it was a big part of the reason she bought me my 69 Buick Special Deluxe. As an adult I used to borrow my dad’s motorcycle once in awhile as well.
I only had one incident on a bike. I was coming around the corner at the bottom of Hampshire Road. There was some loose gravel on the road that I didn’t pay attention to. I slid and laid the bike down. I was going pretty slow so I didn’t really get hurt.
I was surprised Ali didn’t object strongly to the idea of me picking up a used bike. She asked if I would wear a helmet (in Florida you don’t have to). I told her I would. She said she isn’t thrilled with the idea but I assured her I would be careful. I’m sure when my mom reads this she will freak out. I already have her objections figured out. I’ll tell her I won’t get a motorcycle if she stops smoking. Both risk your health.
It’s nothing that’s going to happen in the immediate future. We don’t have the extra cash floating around to do it right now. I may have a side job coming up that would more than pay for the expense. I’m confident I would be able to navigate the SW Fla roadways safely. Yes as a motorcycle rider your biggest threat are the other clueless drivers that don’t check blind spots but if you drive defensively it makes a lot of difference. I wouldn’t be one of those assholes on a bike that weaves back and forth between cars in traffic, regularly hits triple digits on the speedometer and basically hangs their ass out in the wind waiting for something or someone to take them out.
The gas savings would be huge and riding a motorcycle is an enjoyable experience, much more engaging than driving a car. And hey, worst case scenario, I never have been one that wanted to grow old anyway. 🙂
Ali
Let’s just make it clear that I absolutely do not want you getting a motorcycle. I think it’s a stupid idea and I would rather pay the gas money than have you out on Naples roads on any sort of death bike. We did talk about the logistics of it and the helmet thing, but it doesn’t change my mind that I don’t want you getting one. But of course I know you well enough that if I say absolutetly not, then you’ll want one even more. I think it’s really really really really stupid.
