Non-stop, Sad Sunday

This weekend felt like one big blur of activity that never really stopped.  I hit the track again first thing Saturday for a run that felt more like May than February.  The temperature at 6AM was almost 70 degrees and it was humid.  I get enough of those temps for 6-7 months out of the year, I wasn’t happy running in the soupy air in the middle of winter.  The 13 laps felt like a struggle, just like it normally does.

Cindy did me a favor and knocked out the weeding for me on Friday.  She also had the chicken coop clean by the time I got home from the run so it felt odd to not have my normal plate of work to attend to first thing.  We instead spent a good portion of Saturday morning doing something fun.  We took the MiniPro and my Msuper to the nearby school and parked there.  We then road into the adjacent Waterways development to browse through the community yard sale they were holding.  We did this last year as well and it was fun.  It was again this year.  We didn’t buy anything although Cindy did make a lowball offer on a used kayak that the seller didn’t quite bite on.

We stopped home to go grab Elsa and then went to walk a friend’s dog.  By the time we got home the morning had been consumed.  It was nice to not have work and more work be the start of my Saturday for once.

Saturday afternoon I dug into my automotive project, replacing the headlights on the Prius, again.  Instead of throwing another set of halogens in there I spent big bucks and got some LED headlights because they are rated to last much, much longer.  Because of the design of the LED bulbs I thought replacement was going to be significantly easier than what I normally have to do.  Well as the video depicts, that was not the case but a lot of my pain and suffering was from not paying close enough attention to the directions.

After I uploaded the Prius video, I was finally able to upload another video, my 1000 video, something I actually had recorded over the last two weeks.  Yes, believe it or not my YouTube channel actually has 1000 videos in it’s catalog.  Like I said this video was a bit different as it was shot over multiple days which gives it a unique and interesting (if I do say so myself) feel.  Take a peek at if you have 15 minutes and of course, don’t forget to like and subscribe!

I spent most of Saturday evening in the hobby room.  First I rearranged all of my printers.  The big CR-10 had to be moved because the workbench height was a potential problem with the shelves above it.  On a high print the CR-10 print head would actually hit the shelf.  I also wanted to make room for the new printer I was sent by GearBest.  So after a lot of shuffling I got around to opening and setting up my AnyCubic I3 Mega.

Unlike my last printer, the Ender 2, which was a kit with dozens of parts whcih required 3-4 hours of assembly time, the AnyCubic printer was a dream.  I had to attach two parts with 8 screws and I was basically done.  Within a half hour I was ready to do my first test print which turned out perfectly.  I really like the new printer for many reasons which I outline in the video.

So Sunday morning we “slept in” until 7:20 or so.  As is often the case I put my clothes on and headed out to tend to the chickens.  I opened the door to their run and they came scurrying out full of energy as normal.  I then walked over to the coop itself and opened up the doors to begin the unfun job of daily clean up.  I froze in my tracks when on the floor to the left of the perch I saw a motionless chicken.  I felt a rush of emotion as I quickly realized it was Peaches.  I looked closer to verify she was indeed dead which she clearly was.

Cindy came out to help me but I instead had to yell to her that Peaches was dead.  She gasped in horror, feeling the same weight of shock that I was already bearing.  I felt terrible sadness as I bent down to pick up her stiff body and carried it outside.  I laid her on top of the chicken tractor run temporarily.  “What the hell happened?” ran through my mind.  I then realized that although the palm rats have knocked 7 of my 8 coop cams offline, the interior camera did still work.  I knew I would be able to see what happened.

It just seemed surreal to me that the bird would be dead, she was acting 100% normal on Saturday, energetic, and looking to be first in line as always.  However there had been one odd thing about Peaches in the last few weeks.  For some reason she would not go up on the perch with the other birds on her own.  Instead she would set up over on the nesting boxes.  I never thought much of it more than just one of the weird quirks chickens have, they have a lot of them.  Each night when I put them to bed I would simply pick Peaches up, put her on the perch and she would be fine.

After cleaning up the coop Cindy and I went through the somber and sad task of burying Peaches.  As I dug a couple foot deep grave with tears in my eyes I thought about all the funny moments  Peaches brought to us.  Like I said she was always first in line when it came to food.  She followed us around like a disciple.  When Cindy would put down plates of yogurt and crushed shells Peaches would hop right into the middle of the plate to try to keep the other birds from getting at it.

She also was the first chicken that actually found the lawn mower as an opportunity instead of something to be feared.  She would follow me around, closely, so close that at times I had to shoosh her away so I wouldn’t run into her.  She learned that the freshly cut grass was an opportunity to harvest bugs by the bushel.  She always made me smile. As we laid her still body, wrapped in burlap into the grave it was a very sad moment.

So after I returned inside we reviewed the coop footage.  She was fine until right around 3AM.  She started having issues balancing on the perch and then all of a sudden fell backwards.  Once she hit the ground there was only a second or two of movement and then stillness.  It was imagery that I didn’t enjoy seeing.

The video also brought immediate guilt.  Seeing her lose balance made me wonder if the reason she was standing on the nesting boxes was because she felt unstable for awhile.  I wondered that if I left her off the perch if she would still be alive.  We also wonder if it wasn’t whatever was making her wobble that killed her but the fall itself.  She could have very easily broken her neck depending on how she went down, which gave me yet another avenue of guilt.  We had talked a bit in the past about making the perch lower to facilitate older birds.  If the fall wasn’t so far she may have survived it.  So yea, I felt and still feel pretty responsible for the whole thing.

Each time we have lost chickens there has been some sort of immediate response to hopefully avoid the scenario in the future.  When the racoon broke into the chicken tractor and killed our first three hens I immediately double latched both side doors of the tractor so they were coon-proof.  That attack also was the basis for us building the new coop to be as predator proof as it is. When Cocoa was taken by a coyote we installed a new security DVR system that gave full view of the coop perimeter so we would know of any weak spots.  With Peaches demise we once again took action.

During the afternoon I cut a full foot of the height of the perch.  The birds now are sitting at two feet or less off the ground which hopefully makes a fall less treacherous.  It has the side effect of possibly making cleanup less of a mess as excrement has less time to accelerate before hitting the rubber mats below.  I hope the changes help avoid this scenario playing out again.  The image of Peaches still on the floor ran through my head all day long.

We tried to keep rolling along in the day instead of dwelling on the sadness.  We hit Home Depot and Sam’s Club.  I had been at Sam’s Saturday to grab a UPS for my hobby room shuffle.  When I was there I saw they had huge 32 inch Samsung curved monitors for $219, super cheap.  I joked to Cindy on Saturday that maybe once I get my tax refund I would grab a couple.  Well when I did my bills Sunday morning I saw my tax refund was already in my account, which was amazing since it was only submitted a few days prior.   So anyway, I grabbed two of these monster monitors.

During the afternoon in addition to reworking the perch I also drug out the gas pressure washer.  Cindy had cleaned the lower areas of the pool cage but can’t reach the high stuff.  Since the cage is due to be rescreened in the next week or two I wanted to make sure it got done before that happens.  It was about an hour of less than fun work but the cage once again looks white instead of a greenish hue.

I finally got around to unboxing the first of my two monitors when I hit my first snag, the inputs were only HDMI and Display Port.  Although my video card has a DP output I did not have the cable required.  I immediately shot out to get one, striking out at Wal-mart and then having to drive another 5 miles to Best Buy to overpay for one.  So when I got home I was anxious to get my new massive monitors set up.  I opened up the second box and was in disbelief, the screen had a crack in it.

I was not pleased as you can imagine.  I angrily reboxed the monitor and immediately retraced the route I just took 30 minutes prior, going back to Sam’s.  I luckily just missed what could have been another incredibly frustrating scenario as I walked in the store at 5:55.  I had no idea they closed at 6PM.  If I was a few minutes later I can’t imagine what my blood pressure would have been.  Anyway, my replacement monitor was undamaged and I got everything hooked up.  The huge curved screens take some getting used to but damn it’s awesome.

Sunday evening both Cindy and I were busy with hobby stuff.  Cindy has really been getting good with her Cameo and I had video footage for a couple different things that I needed to edit and get published.  We ended our weekend late Sunday night watching our first curling match of the Olympics, it was glorious.

Blind, Tesla in space, Here again

I have neglected to mention how fascinating and exciting it was to see the recent Falcon Heavy launch which resulted in a Tesla Roadster orbiting the planet with a 24/7 live view.  The mission was not perfect as only two of the three rockets used safely landed back on Earth.  The center core rocket had an issue that caused it to hit the ocean at high speed.  Regardless it is yet another feather in the cap of Tesla and Elon Musk, one of the great innovators of our time, who just happens to come from one of those shithole countries.

So the Olympics are back, this time the winter variety.  Generally speaking I am a fan of everything and anything to do with the Olympics.  Since they moved the winter and summer games to alternating two year cycles it has been great.  It seems like the Rio summer games just ended and here we are.  Of course when you get this old time accelerates so quickly that a two year span feels like next to nothing.  Bring on the curling!

So the Prius headlights have been frustrating.  In the last year I have had to replace both bulbs twice and now BOTH headlights are dead again.  I’m not quite sure what is causing the early failure but I have taken a different approach this time, ordering two LED replacement bulbs for the car which are very expensive but hopefully will fix my problem permanently.  If you have seen my videos regarding replacing the bulbs in the past you know it can be a frustrating task.  Because of the way the LEDs are designed it actually SHOULD be an easier job this time around.

I received my new 3D printer, another spiff from GearBest, I look forward to setting it up and playing with it this weekend!

Brighter than advertised

So last night out of the blue I suggested to Cindy that we watch Bright, the Netflix movie with Will Smith that has gotten mostly negative feedback from world although I have heard from some others that it was not bad at all.  I knew the movie had orcs and elves in it so that fact alone made it interesting to me.  Cindy had no idea what the movie was about but trusted my recommendation.

I was pleasantly surprised that I thought the movie was very entertaining.  The insertion of orcs and elves into the story line to represent some of the racism present in this wonderful world of ours was an interesting twist.  Despite not having the WoW based affinity to orcs and elves that I have, Cindy really enjoyed the movie as well.  It was solid B+ entertainment for me all day long.

I really am at the point in my life where I wish I could break out of the normal five day a week work routine.

Got the gear

Last night Cindy and I placed our order for Eagles Super Bowl Champion merchandise.  I didn’t go too crazy, getting a t-shirt, hat, glass and pendant as my keepsakes.  We got Cindy a cool oversized tri-color Eagles SB shirt for her collection.  Of course nothing was cheap but I figure I will be holding onto these items till the very end so I don’t mind.  Who knows if I will ever get a chance to experience this again.

I have been watching Nick Foles speak after the Super Bowl and he has been reaffirming what I already knew, he is just a good dude.  He’s level headed, humble, honest and just has his shit together.  I couldn’t be happier how his story has played out this year and I can only hope it means good things for his future.

Yesterday I got a set of replacement LED headlights for the Prius.  I have had the factory halogens dying on me every few months so I am hoping that jumping to LED will get me some better longevity as well as a brighter yet cooler appearance. It looks like that will be my featured project of the upcoming weekend.

Yesterday was the Naples city council elections.  There were three open spots and only four candidates, one of which was the president of the running club, the same president when I left a couple years ago.  I was surprised when I heard he was running for local office for several reasons.  His bid was unsuccessful as he finished in fourth place.  It takes a unique skill set and personality to want to become involved in local politics, which none of these I possess, thankfully.

An epic ending

Sure I would like to just skip to the most epic Super Bowl of my life but I feel I should give the rest of the weekend proper representation.  Saturday morning I got up and drug myself out of bed to go run, despite a lower body that was STILL sore from squatting and deadlifting on Tuesday.  I slogged through the run, never feeling comfortable.

When I got home I went right into a small chore list that I wanted to knock out.  After doing so Cindy, Elsa and I headed out to grab some coffee and run some errands.  We took the Tacoma so I could throw another 15 bags of top soil in the back to continue my winter long ground elevation project behind the chicken coop.  My hope is I am able to at least give the birds a decent size island in the back that will escape the soggy effects of wet season.

Cindy had a ton to do for SuperBowl party prep and she was working on it in earnest, with both food and decoration prep.  I kept busy doing my own things which included  3D printing, laser engraving, and a few more things. Late in the afternoon I took my wheels over to the school to futz around a bit.  I shot some footage for my upcoming 1000th video on my YouTube channel.  I’m hoping to make that one pretty cool.

On Saturday night we planned on watching Hell or High Water, our Netflix rental however there was some sort of problem with the disc and it wouldn’t read  in my Blu-ray player.  I told Cindy I would just get it on X1 par-per-view.  Yea it sucks to pay for something I could get for free but it wasn’t a big deal.  Well it turned out I didn’t have to pay anything since the movie was already on Showtime.  I could watch it on demand for free, cool.

The movie has a strong cast and an interesting plot.  It sort of had a Robin Hood good natured vibe to it until things got unexpectedly dark towards the end.  It was a good B+ movie for sure but it sure did not end up as I expected.

Sunday was the day. We had a lot to do, well I had a lot, Cindy had an unbelievable amount of work that she did.  She LOVES planning parties and doing everything connected to it.  She was literally on the go almost the entire day.

Her work was nothing short of incredible.  In addition to the conventional food prep Cindy made these amazing baked creations including the football field on the right and Eagles cookies made with a 3D cutter I printed.  Katie came over in the afternoon and did the decorating for the cake pops on the left.  She did an amazing job with them, putting her creativity on display.

I had the 3D printers working hard most of the day as well, creating an Eagles themed quarter tray and a toothpick holder, both of which I designed from scratch.  I filled in the squares of the betting board, a tradition from the very first Super Bowl party that was ever hosted at the house.  I tried to make more of the bets have less than a 50/50 chance so there was the possibility of some bigger winners.  For example one of the bets was the distance of the first punt.

We flipped on the tv as early as 12:30 and they already had Super Bowl pre-game on, wow.  I did mostly the grunt work part of the prep, moving and rearranging things, setting stuff up and filling in with whatever else Cindy needed.  Like I said the amount of effort she put into this party was nothing short of amazing.  About mid-afternoon there was a lull in prep, most things were done.  I decided to knock out an oil change on Cindy’s car as it was one less thing off my mental to do list.  It was uneventful and only took about a half hour, including clean up.

So the party was scheduled to start around 5:30.  Our first guest arrived a few minutes after that.  It was Megan, whose dog Wishbone has been walked by Cindy and I several times.  I was surprised when Cindy told me that Wishbone was coming to the party.  Of course my first thought always jumps to a dog marking his territory in the house.  Luckily Wishbone had no incidents but instead circled the party more or less non-stop, looking for food.  He literally did not sit/lay down once.

Other guests arrived steadily from there on.  By 6’oclock almost the entire roster was there and the house was loud and full of energy.  This was a very special party since MY team was in it.  The crowd was mostly friends of ours from the running club and a few others.  Ali and her boyfriend Shugs even came out, with Sadie of course which Elsa was thrilled about.

I sort of figured that Elsa would mostly hide during the party but surprisingly she was in the middle of the crowd, even snuggling up to Matt on the sofa for a period of time which surprised the hell out of me.

I did myself a favor and watched a lot of the commercials ahead of time since they were posted on YouTube.  Doing so allowed me to actually hear and enjoy them, something that is very difficult to do with 15 people in a room.  However I could watch the action on the field just fine.

The first half was pretty crazy with both teams moving the ball but the Eagles taking more advantage, scoring pretty easy and often.  There were two defining moments of the first half for me. The first was when Patriots pulled a trick play that had Tom Brady downfield as a receiver, a wide open receiver.  He proceeded to drop a pass that hit him right in the hands.  However on a 4th and goal, the Eagles stole that page from the Patriots and actually executed the play to perfection with Nick Foles pulling in a pass from the tight end for a touchdown.  It was an incredibly ballsy call but that was theme of this team all year, aggressive play calling.

The halftime show, which I didn’t entirely see, seemed not bad but not quite as iconic as I would have expected.  Almost always there is some sort of unannounced collaboration that goes on.  However Justin Timberlake performed with nobody else except towards the end where he sung some Purple Rain as an image of Prince was projected onto a big curtain.  I saw some people say the show was great so maybe I just have bad taste.

The second half of the game was a sprint.  All of a sudden the Eagles defense had no answers to stop the Patriots.  Luckily the Eagles offense was still scoring but the Patriots were scoring faster and way too easily.  In the fourth quarter the Patriots took their first lead of the game, by one point and I was worried that we were watching the start of another Eagles failure at the precipice of the ultimate victory.

By the time the fourth quarter started almost everybody had left, it was only Cindy, myself, Ali, and Shuggs.  Outside of Shuggs we were the only real Eagles fans there although pretty much everyone at the party wanted to see the Patriots lose.  It somehow seemed fitting that as the game came down to it’s teeth gritting, heart stopping conclusion, we were the only ones left.

So when Zac Ertz scored the go ahead touchdown which Chris Collinsworth, who has always been an asshole when it comes to the Eagles, was trying to convince the world was going to be overturned, we went nuts.  But because of an early missed extra point and two failed 2 point conversions, the Eagles were only up by 5 points with two and a half minutes to go.  With Tom Brady’s track record and the way he had been torching the Eagles at will the entire second half I was, concerned.

We all yelled at the tv at the Eagles defense that SOMEBODY had to make a play.  They had not even sacked Brady the entire game.  On the very next play, it happened, Brady was hit and fumbled the ball, recovered by the Eagles.  We went ape shit, literally ape shit.  Instead of folding up their tent, the Eagles actually came up when it mattered the most and smacked the Patriots in the mouth.

Unfortunately the Eagles couldn’t run the clock out and had to settle for a field goal which gave them an 8 point lead, meaning the Patriots could possibly score and make a two point conversion to tie it.  The good news was the Patriots only had 30 seconds to drive the length of the field and no time outs.  Brady made a valiant effort and actually got close enough to throw a ball into the endzone for a hail mary as time expired that thankfully fell to the ground after coming dangerously close to being caught on a rebound. It was over. The Eagles actually won the Super Bowl…..

Even though there were only four of us, we made enough noise for 40.  Ali had tears in her eyes of joy, Cindy was smiling ear to ear and I was just screaming.  My entire life I pulled for the Birds to win it all.  After five decades of near misses it seemed surreal that we were the last team standing, finally.

In the past the Eagles were good enough that they were expected to win.  This team that fought through some severe injury losses, including their starting QB, to get all the way to the end, being the underdog in each and every playoff game they played.  I don’t think I could have written a better script.  Nick Foles, who I always liked when he was with the team the first time around, was simply amazing.  He played smart and clean, if he felt nervous he did not show it, instead making throw after throw with his TD reception going down as one of the more memorable in SB history.

The game smashed records, not only for a Super Bowl but for any NFL game, ever.  Never have two teams put up as many yards as the Patriots and Eagles did.  The final score was the most points in SB history and even taking my Eagles partisanship out of the picture, I think it will go down as one of the best Super Bowl games ever.  To have my team be part of that equation and the winning side of it on top, is something I will cherish till things fade to dark.

Before the game I posted on Facebook that if the Eagles win I would jump in the pool.  I’m not the type to not follow through on such a promise so after ripping off my shirt and socks I jumped into the 60 something degree pool water after letting out the most enthusiastic E A G L E S cheer of my lifetime. Sure the water felt cold but my inner warmth from the glow of Super Bowl victory helped insulate me.

I’m glad I took today off from work to recover, relax and bask in the glow of a new reality where the Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions!

Get it over with

So one of the many unfun things about turning 50 is the requirement for our county health insurance plan that I undergo a colonoscopy, a procedure I never had.  I understand the reasoning behind it, it’s a good preventative measure to catch any potential issues early.  It certainly doesn’t mean I want to have it done.

I have been putting it off for a couple months but finally decided to schedule the colonoscopy yesterday which should take place at the beginning of March.  Everyone says the procedure itself is no big deal, it’s the prep ahead of time that sucks where they give you a drink that flushes out your intestines, forcefully.  I’m sure that like most things, once it’s over with I will think it was less of a big deal than it currently appears.  Still, if I wasn’t forced to do it for insurance reasons, I’d probably put it off for a few more years.

While I was in the wellness mindset I also mentally committed to go get an eye exam on Monday.  My distance vision has been deteriorating for the last six or seven years.  For about the last five years one of my New Year’s resolutions has been to get my eyes checked and I have continued to push it off.  Since my eyes still work for looking at a computer screen all day I have just rolled with it.

My problem is exactly the thing that lasik does best at addressing but there is no way I would want to spend that kind of money.  Getting contacts is also out of the picture as I have a HORRIBLE time doing anything eye related.  I can’t even keep them open to put in eye drops.  Part of the reason I have not gotten my eyes checked is fear of the eye exam itself.   I am hoping the end result of all of this is I get a prescription for glasses that will allow me to comfortably see distance when necessary.  I can’t imagine a scenario where I would want to or need to wear glasses full time.

This weekend will have an extra level of activity with the Super Bowl Party we are hosting at the house.  Of course this year is taking on additional significance since the Eagles are participants, trying to do what up this point in my life has been impossible, win it all.  Cindy is in full party planning mode, something she really enjoys.  I’m very glad she likes doing it so much because I certainly don’t.

We will be making various tweaks to the house to accommodate the guests which could number 15 or more.  This year we also have the option of splitting the party between the house and Cindy’s RV which can comfortably hold another half dozen people and gets clear reception of NBC on it’s antennae.  I’m sure it will be a fun time for sure.  The only downside is when you are the host of a party it is sometimes difficult to focus on the game itself.  If there was ever a game I wanted to focus on, it’s this one.

Win or lose I am glad I took Monday off to recover.  I will be other too depressed or too elated to be bothered with something like a job for 24 hours.
