Added

Dipping back into the time machine yesterday motivated me to add some new entries into the random memory list which was already pages long.  It would not surprise me if it was last updated a decade ago.  I copied the existing entries and moved them to a page here on the blog where they can be much more easily maintained. I then added a dozen or two random thoughts that popped into my head.  I’ll try to add more as time allows. The new list is here.

This weekend I need to go to one of our branches for a couple hours Saturday to oversee a migration of the state software used to process driver licenses.  This is a staged statewide conversion which rolls out over the next few months.  My hope is I won’t need to be required to be onsite for all of our roll outs if we get a good handle on things this time around.   The remainder of the weekend will be tight with to do’s.  I have a number of video related things to do as well.  I also soon need to start working on getting my tax information together.

Speaking of taxes, I ran a year end report on the 3D store sales.  I more than doubled the sales of the prior year which is sort of incredible based on how limited my marketing is.  I am hoping things work out ok from a tax perspective.  I have a ton of expenses that get written off in connection to the store and my “content creator” business.  In addition I have been putting some money away during the year to help cover any potential tax liability.  My tax situation is also helped by the fact that I have always claimed zero dependents on my W4 withholding so I have more taxes pulled out up front.  I have never not received a refund since I have been in Florida, this may be my first year that no longer is true.

Random retro

I don’t have anything present day I chose to talk about right now so let me dive back into childhood and talk about how I managed to remain entertained.  Present day children are conditioned from a very young age to be entertained by screens, an electronic pacifier.  Back in the 70’s the only video content available came in the form of television.  In our house we had one of them and it was a large piece of furniture, nothing that could be utilized on the go.  Plus because our house was situated at the bottom of hill our TV reception was very poor, getting maybe a half dozen channels, if that.

So back then entertainment and distraction was not thrust upon you, you had to come up with your own ways to make each day interesting.  Living on an old farm property gave us many ways to entertain and/or get in trouble.  Climbing trees were a big activity for me.  I would regularly climb 20 feet or higher into trees, without supervision, something that would be seen as borderline child neglect nowadays.  At one point I had the evil idea to throw objects at cars passing on the road while I was way up in one of the dense pine trees.  I vividly recall the fear when a car slammed on it’s brakes and the driver came storming out, looking to see where the debris came from.  I froze like a statue in the tree, afraid to even breathe as it may reveal my location.  Luckily I escaped detection but I never did that stunt again.

Right across that same road there was a creek that was a normal play destination area.  The creek was at the base of a very steep hill so it was not unusual for rocks from the hill to roll into the water below.  There were two main activities I recall as being my mainstays in the creek, building dams out of the rocks and letting my super hero action figures “swim” down the creek.  This was a somewhat risky move as you had to make sure you grabbed the action figure before it got to the more fast moving and deeper water further downstream.  Of course bad behavior also occurred at the creek, highlighted by the time I decided to fill Todd’s shoes with mud, for no good reason at all.

The big old barn was a place of polar opposites.  On the second story was my dad’s junked Alfa that I used to sit in, imagining I was driving countless times.  The second floor also included the old hay stalls that had hay that could have been over a decade old inside of it.  As a kid I gave no thought to what sort of disgusting mess I was jumping into time and again, filling my lungs with large quantities of unknown irritants.  Rodents of course lived in there as well but I don’t recall seeing many. I also painted a rectangle on the outside wall of the barn that I used once I got into baseball, to work on my accuracy as a pitcher.

The first floor of the barn was a different story.  We used to store our bikes in there so I had to go in the side entrance often.  I was convinced there was something evil lurking in the stables.  I rarely would move my eyes upward when I went in there, just grabbing the bike and and getting the hell out.  I was sure if I looked into the distance a pair of red eyes would be looking back at me.  I was really fearful of the space.

Speaking of bikes, I used to go on rides by myself all the time.  The most common destinations were Brightbill’s store in Gouglersville where I bought the overwhelming majority of my baseball card collection from, one pack at a time.  The other spot was Colonial Hills Bowling alley where I spent a small fortune in their arcade over 10 years or so.  I even rode my bike a few times to my cousins house, alone which was a distance of probably close to 10 miles.

Bad/stupid behavior on the bike was a thing as well.  I’ll never forget the one time that I decided I wanted to attempt to make the 90 degree turn into our driveway without applying my brakes at all.  Remember my saying earlier that the house was at the bottom of a long hill.  My attempt went terribly wrong as my high speed caused me to swing wide as I entered the driveway, sending me down the small bank that surrounded the house and straight into a tree.

The five or six acres had plenty of other options, the abandoned rusted farm equipment, the fenced in area that we used as a makeshift baseball field, and the woods up behind the garage that had an infinite amount of items to keep us busy. However probably one of the most often used sections of the property was the small strip of grass between the small storage shed and the barn.  The strip was maybe 125 feet long and was the spot where most of our 1-2 person athletic competitions took place such as wiffleball, field goal kicking, punting, and tackle football.  The amount of games we played in that small section of the property probably numbered into the 1000’s.

Of course we did get screen entertainment as well, especially when my mom bought us a Mattel Intellivision in the early 80’s, which at the time felt like an unreal stroke of good fortune.  Todd and I played that thing to absolute death.

I always look back at my childhood as a constant time of discovery of both the good and bad parts of life. When my parents got divorced I experienced some of the darkest points of my childhood.  I recall wondering how it was to be an adult like my mom and dad and how in the world I would ever find my way to being one myself someday.   It’s surreal to try to reflect on the long and winding path that has gone in many unforeseen directions that have lead me to this moment in time.

What was the point of this entry you ask?  There is none, other than a random brain dump about what once was.

Many years ago I made a web page with random short blurbs about periods of my life.  If you found this throwback interesting, you may like this as well. http://duf.net/shawn/thoughts.htm

Next to nothing

Yesterday a batch of 20 EUC Army shirts that I ordered came in.  I had ordered some shirts from another company that I wasn’t all that pleased with.  The company I ordered from this time I have used before and their shirts have lasted and looked good for years.

I had Cindy be my model for the 3D store entry which looked cute.  I am making next to nothing on the sale of the shirts.  Unlike the 3D stands, figuring the profit margin on a shirt is very easy.  Selling each shirt for $14.99 will generate enough revenue for me to buy a cup of coffee. I intentionally set the price of the shirt low because I see it as more of a marketing effort than a profit reaping one.  If the shirts cost less hopefully it is an easier snap decision for someone that in the big picture results in free word of mouth advertising for me. If the interest is there it will be easy enough to expand the clothing line into different styles, colors, and more.

Told on them, Buggy bowling

I neglected to mention that once again our local Dunkin Donuts was engaging it’s door locking, drive thru only shenanigans this past weekend.  I decided to do some research and find out who owned the local Dunkin franchises, I knew one person owned a bunch of them.  Through some newspaper articles I found a name which I then found on Facebook.  His profile included a picture of a little girl surrounded by donuts so I was pretty sure I had the right guy.  I sent him a FB message asking if he owned the local Collier franchises and hoped to get a response.  Imagine my surprise when he confirmed he was the guy a little while later.

I gave him the background of the last two weeks with random door locking as their way to deal with light staffing along with the repeated scenes of angry and confused customers since there was no signage indicating what was going on.  I said I just wanted to make him aware of the situation in case he did not know.  Once again I got a response, surprisingly. He said there have always been challenges with staffing during the winter down here but he was not aware that this location was locking it’s door.  He thanked me for letting him know about it.  I don’t know if there will be any impact from my reaching out but hopefully somebody realizes that locking the front door is not the answer to the problem.

Katie, Cindy and I had another late night VR session, this time primarily trying out virtual bowling.  Unfortunately the multiplayer experience in this game is buggy and confusing.  Katie and I did manage to bowl a couple games against each other.  My real life bowling accomplishments didn’t translate that well to virtual bowling, Katie beat me in both games.  Even in defeat it was a fun experience.  At one point Katie and I lost the ability to talk so Katie was saying funny stuff and singing.  All of a sudden she heard someone else in the virtual lane say they could hear her, which was hilarious.

I also was able to get Half Life Alyx working wirelessly which is so much better for the immersion process.  Having a wire trip you up all the time is a bit distracting.  I had all of the tools already in place to make it work, I just had to install a patch for the Virtual Desktop app to complete the loop.  I am currently stuck in some courtyard and have to figure out how to get out.

Spinning wheels

I had a busy weekend once again.  However despite being in motion for most of the two days I still felt like I wasn’t making much progress.  Friday night I was up late as Cindy, Katie and I were in VR hanging out.  When I say late I mean late, midnight was a few strokes away by the time I closed my eyes.  Saturday after getting the chores handled we headed out for errands.  Once again the door on our fcking Dunkin Donuts was locked as they supposedly did not have enough staff to at least have a single employee handle the counter.  Cindy pounded on the door and waited until they brought our Call Ahead order out.  This policy is absolutely ludicrous. I wish I had a contact number for the local franchise owner to complain.

One of our stops was Rural King.  The visit had the most unmasked retail experience I had seen since the pandemic began.  I would bet at least a third of the people we saw were unmasked. With the typical Rural King clientele this isn’t all that surprising yet most retailers in our area still have a mask required policy, despite the state of Florida itself not having any official covid restrictions now.  Cindy gets more bent out of shape about maskless people than I do.  I just am aware that I am not the mask police and if I tell someone they should wear a mask the odds of it making an actual difference is a few millimeters above zero.

Saturday afternoon I rotated the tires on the Tacoma, probably 10,000 miles later than I should have.  I recently started noticing some feathering on the outside edge of both front tires.  The truck has just over 40,000 miles at this point so the original OEM tires have been holding up well.  I am hoping the rotation will give me another 10-12k of use before I have to seriously consider swapping rubber.

I also did two additional videos on EUC projects.  One was adding spiked pedals to the V11 and the other was adding a yoga block to the seat to see if it made the wheel easier for me to sit on.  The first project went as planned.  The second was an epic fail.

Sunday morning Cindy and I tried to get our morning chores done quickly as we were meeting Katie, Daniel and DJ at the Naples Zoo.  I bet I have not been to the zoo in at least 10 years.  Taking a toddler through a zoo is not the easiest of tasks, the four of us took turns carrying DJ.  Overall he did well, the only issue was when we took the monkey island boat tour, he got a little grumpy for a few minutes when we restrained him from trying to get down on the floor.  It was cool seeing all of the animals but as I expressed on Friday, I do feel guilty seeing the animals confined, despite the zoos commendable efforts to have the animals in very large natural habitats.  Cindy and Katie spent as much time admiring the beautiful landscaping on the zoo grounds as they did looking at animals.

After we were done DJ came home with Cindy and I while Katie and Daniel went for groceries.  We had fun hanging out at the house for awhile.  Babysitting a toddler is no joke, you literally are on constant surveillance duty making sure he stays out of trouble.

Once  Katie came and got DJ I dug into some more tasks.  One of those was installing fire suppression balls around the hobby room.  There have been a number of EUC fires reported in the community lately.  Although none of them are with wheels I own, the potential is always there with lithium ion powered devices.  3D printers are also quite capable fire hazards as well so I thought it couldn’t hurt to at least put some sort of fire mitigation in the room in addition to the fire extinguisher I already have in there.  The balls were not cheap, I spent almost $200 for five of them.

Of course I made a video about it and it did not take long for the comments rolling in about my selection of AFO balls.  Evidently AFO is a chinese knock off of Elide fire suppression balls.  It seems the AFO brand, like many other chinese knock offs doesn’t perform as well as the original.   I thought the AFO product was a bit pricey, the Elide brands is more than double the price.  Having the AFO balls in there is better than nothing but I hope to add some of the Elide devices as well.

As suggested in the title, despite keeping busy most of the weekend it still feels like there is more, much more that needs to be attended to.

No sense, The Joys, It’s a Zoo

Yesterday after work I stopped at Sam’s Club.  After a smooth trip I stopped at Dunkin Donuts to grab coffee for Cindy and myself.   As I approached the store I saw the drive thru line was empty, except for one car that turned in just ahead of me.  So as I sat there I slowly found myself getting more and more aggravated by the woman in the SUV in front of me.  She first asked if they had a good selection of donuts left.  When she was told they did she began a painfully slow order where she ordered one by one after asking the DD employee to list every type of donut they had available.  As the employee listed the donuts the woman asked for some feedback about certain varieties. It was maddening.  In total she was ordering for at least 5 minutes.

By the end of it I had lost control of my ability to restrain myself from making loud commentary on this woman’s life choices out my rolled down window.  By the end of her marathon session there were half a dozen cars behind me. I have had a life long frustration with people that don’t understand the issue with doing long and/or complex orders through the drive thru window at Dunkin Donuts.  I always felt that a drive thru was designed for quick in and out orders and if I needed something more involved like picking out what dozens I want, it makes sense to walk my fat ass inside and pick them out 1st person, instead of having the employee rattle off everything over an intercom.  Yes it’s a first world problem that means absolutely zero in the grand scheme of things but in that moment in time, it annoyed me greatly, all the same.

Last few days I have been hobbling around like a nursing home resident.  I did squats at the gym Wednesday.  There is no squat rack there so in order for me to barbell squat I have to clean the weight up to my chest, press it over my head, lower it onto my shoulders and then do my reps.  I then reverse the process at the end of the set.  There is normally a lot of cracking and crunching sounds in my back when doing this but this time the sounds were accompanied by bad lower back pain that evening.  That has now teamed up with soreness in my lower body from the deep squats so I feel like a rusty old wheelbarrow right about now.  The joys of aging can not be overstated.

This weekend the weather is supposed to be fantastic.  We hope to take advantage of it on Sunday with a trip to the Zoo with Katie and DJ.  It should be a fun little family outing.  I’ve only been to the zoo down here a few times.  I love animals so the zoo is a good fit for me but I now find myself feeling much more guilt and sadness about animals being forced to live in captivity.  Walking around with my little buddy will be fun regardless of my feelings about the animals situation.

A Wave, Virtual Celebration

I was happy to see the inauguration went down without any notable violence in DC or anywhere else like was feared.  It seems taking away Donald’s bullhorn has dulled the edge of the lunatic fringe a bit, which is good.  I thought Biden’s speech was really good, focusing on the big picture and repeatedly encouraging the dissolving of the acid filled rhetoric that has become commonplace.    It was a higher road sort of speech that I thought was the right message.  It’s a disservice to all of us to continue to participate in constant political conflict that distracts us all from how the super rich have been quietly influencing legislation to pad their pockets while we peons throw tomatoes at each other.

When I was at the gym on the treadmill warming up Biden was making his speech that I could not hear, only read via closed captioning.  At a certain moment out of nowhere I felt a wave of emotion smack me hard.  For some reason it just hit me that Trump and all of the negativity he fostered is no longer in command.  Biden may be old and a career politician but at least I can take assurance that he is an empathetic and decent human being, something distinctly missing from the office since 2016.  The realization on the the cardio machine that better days are ahead made my normally dark and pessimistic outlook a little brighter in that split second.

Last night in bed I slapped the VR headset on to hang out in Big Screen.  It’s an app where you are inserted with other VR people in rooms or theaters where you can watch TV shows, movies, or even content streamed from someone’s computer.  Last night I saw a theater named Biden Inauguration party.  I stepped into the virtual theater with 11 other people.  On the screen was a massive CNN rebroadcast of Biden’s speech.  As it played the others in the audience talked freely amongst themselves, all sharing in the happiness of leaving the Trump era in the rear view mirror.  I am encouraging Katie and Cindy to get the app for their headsets as well so we can hang out even when geographically separated.

I printed this last night for Cindy.  I spend so much time cranking out parts for EUC accessories I sometimes forget to embrace the simple joy of making something really cool and fun, just for the hell of it.

Nice curves, How To, The Last of the Worst

Yesterday I had one of those dream days for solar production.  The entire day was bright and sunny resulting in the big output curve graph you see to the left.  This type of production happens a lot for the next 3-4 months so hopefully we can start digging into the overall power deficit that exists so far.

Last night I shot a quick video based on a suggestion from a 3D store customer.  They suggested that I demonstrate how the stands should be assembled, something I took for granted because it honestly is pretty simple.  However I decided it couldn’t hurt and put together this roughly 8 minute how to.

I heard Trump already has vacated the White House, abandoning the presidency and the tradition that existed since 1869 where the outgoing president participated in the inauguration ceremony of the incoming president as part of the smooth and peaceful transition of power.  As ridiculous and appropriately childish Trump’s decision to take his ball and go home is, in the big picture it’s better not having him there.  It’s one less reminder of the utter insanity he has cultivated the last four years among his indoctrinated following that somehow have been programmed to abandon common decency, values, and respect in exchange for blindly following every ridiculous work out of president Big League’s mouth.

Like everyone that doesn’t have a MAGA hat in their closet, I am hoping the inauguration takes place without another round of violence.  It appears more appropriate precautions are being taken this time.  Tomorrow will finally be a bright new day without an orange spray tanned buffoon making policy decisions based on what feeds his ravenous ego while benefiting the rich and powerful that kiss the ring.

Goodbye Donald Trump.  Your four years in office made racism rise again, greed good again, and ignorance in vogue.  We never had a president like you and hopefully we never will again.

The Day Without a Chore?

Yesterday I made my best effort to not do any significant work or chores outside of the required  chicken clean up.  The clean up was a little more involved as it looked like Popcorn had an egg that broke as it came out so her rear end was a mess.  Cindy helped me as I dunked the hen’s butt in soapy water to get the residue loose. Outside of that my day was pretty chore free.

The rest of my day was spent doing what I wanted like messing around with the Quest 2, playing a lot of WoW, and taking a short ride and then editing the video from it.

There is a weird dilemma in my brain when I have a day that has more rest than play.  Despite having a weekend up until that point that was busy and filled with many minor project completions, a lack of accomplishments, even for one day makes me feel lazy.  It’s always been the case with me and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

It’s funny how YouTube works, a thumbnail with a catchy title makes such a difference in the likelihood of someone clicking “PLAY”.   My video regarding Gotway EUC fires with a big picture of a burned up EUC in thumbnail has outperformed my recent videos by leaps and bounds.  Now you know why 24 hour news channels play the same game using big impact works like “RIPS”, “FEAR”, “DESTROYED” in so many of their titles, it gets eyeballs.

Locked, Didn’t think it would happen again

I thought I would drop an entry in here despite there being one day remaining on my three day weekend.  On Saturday morning I was out at the coop early.  Early enough that I had to take the hens off their perch.  I had a list prepared the night before and I wanted to start working on it.  After doing chicken chores and the weeding Cindy and I headed out for errands.  The first stop on our journey was Dunkin Donuts.

We placed a to go order as we always do.  You place your order on the app a few miles away and by the time you get there it should be ready to go, you just walk in and grab it.  So I parked the truck and Cindy walked in to get it like she always does but there was an issue, the door was locked.  There was a long line of cars at the drive thru and staff inside working yet the front door was locked.  There was no sign on the front doors explaining it either.  The staff appeared to ignore Cindy at the door so we instead had to enter the drive thru line to get our stuff.

When we got to the window we asked why the door was locked. “Short staffed” was the only explanation.  Huh?  In the thousands of trips I have made to DD in my life, never has a location decided the way to handle someone calling in sick was to lock the front door.  It was utterly ridiculous.  When we went on Sunday it was the same deal, door locked.  That time Cindy stayed at the door with other confused/angry patrons until our order was brought out to us.  Initially she was given a dismissive hand signal to indicate we should get in the drive thru line which was literally at least 15 cars deep.  I complained on the DD Twitter account about the lack of common sense.  Today, the lobby was open.

After the DD debacle Saturday we went to my office, I needed to do some network work that took about an hour.  It gives Cindy a chance to clean my office and Elsa for some reason LOVES running around in there, it’s very cute.  After finishing up we made a Tractor Supply stop and then ate lunch outdoors at Burger Fi, one of the very few times we have patronized restaurants in the last 10 months.

During the afternoon I worked on more list items including washing the Tesla and the Tacoma while Cindy was at Katie’s place.  She returned with the Prius so I could do a job I hoped I never had to do again, replacing the headlights in the car.  I had last done the task around three years ago when I put LED lights in because I was tired of having halogens burn out every few months.   The low beams on one of the lights had gone bad so I figured I needed to replace them for safety. The job sucks plain and simple as it requires a lot of working blind as your hand is shoved inside the engine bay.  Of course I shot a video which depicts how aggravating it was.

Doing the work confirmed what I had already warned Cindy and Katie about for 6 months or more, the Prius is on it’s last legs.  After 238,000 miles the car has a multitude of problems, like worn tires, struts, flaky hybrid battery, and the ABS actuator is on it’s way to failure.  None of those potential repairs make a lot of sense based on the age, mileage and worth of the car.  The situation needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Hopefully it happens proactively, I have been sounding the warning bells for a long time. By the time I came in from the work I was miserable.  My hands were ripped up from jamming them into tight spaces and my back was killing me from leaning over the engine bay for way too long.

On Sunday I started off the day with yet another successful palm rat live trapping, my second in as many weeks.  I try to keep them calm but most of the time by the time I release them into the remote area their noses are red and raw from trying to escape.  The weather was overcast and cool all day long.  I felt like I had a deep chill no matter what I did.  The day was busy enough.  Deb came over for a visit where we set up Cindy’s tabletop fire pit which the girls used to keep warm on the patio.

It just felt too chilly to ride but I did take some time and make a video regarding EUCs from a certain company catching on fire, not a good trend to have.

I did some more Prius work before Cindy returned it to Katie.  I replaced all three wiper blades on the car.  The front two were like rocks and the back blade was half torn off.  I finished up by vacuuming the car out and giving it a speed wash. To me maintaining cars for your significant other is a reflex, I guess I am unique in that way compared to some.

Towards the end of the day I was beat and wanted to just unwind with a long session in WoW.  I played until close to 11PM and enjoyed it.  Today we already did our DD run.  We had to do some extra chicken work as I gave Popcorn a “bath”, dunking her rear end in soapy water while Cindy tried to clean her up.  It looks like she had an egg break on the way out and things were pretty messy back there.

I may ride more today, play some more WoW or 360 but I definitely would like to keep the day work free as best as I am able.
